While reviewing my insurance policy with Progressive Insurance, I found out a few items of interest. They will NOT insure a boat that stays in Mexico. They will only insure it in the US state that is the boats "home base." If you take your boat into Mexico it will be covered for the time that it is there. EXCEPT. The boat can not be in Mexico more than six months out of the year. It hase to be at its "home base" at least six months and one day. Also, the Personal Liability that comes with your policy is NOT valid in Mexico.
Anyone recommend a Mexican insurance company?

I understand the liability would not apply, as Mexican law requires that you carry liability from a Mexican company so you need to carry another, liability only policy. However, I looked at the Progressive policy, and don't see where it state anything about the 6 months and 1 day? Am I perhaps missing it somewhere?

On the front page of your policy, it will say "Arizona" or what ever state you are in. That is where your boat is insured and that is the home base of your boat. I didn't see anything in the policy about 6 months either. Call and ask them, their line is recorded and they will give you the scoop.

I didn't see this in the policy, but it's pretty much what I believed. I was debating between states to insure mine in and the agent stated it should be the state where it will be the majority of the time (they said "more than six months"). I view Progressive as a good policy for people that have their boat in the US mostly, but use it in the MX sometimes. Outside of that it gets a little iffy and you probably need to do a little more home work.
Of course 1) if this six month rule is not spelled out in the policy then they wouldn't seem to be able to enforce that (unless there is some underlying insurance law on this point) and 2) how do they actually know where the boat is the majority of the time (not that I'd want to rely on this).

Talked to a Progressive agent (again) and he could not find where the six month rule is printed. However, I agree with JZ in that if a boat is kept in SC more then six months, I'd go with a Mexican Insurance Co. especially liability (you have to get liability from a Mexico Co. anyway). Try International Gateway or Magafee & Edwards for Mexico collision etc. Get a quote and compare the coverage, deductibles, price etc.
