Like many people, for convenience I registered my vehicle in AZ; it was simple and very inexpensive. Also like many people, I used a mail drop address to get registered as well as AZ drivers license, plates, title.
At the time, no request was made for insurance verification. Of course a few months later I received a notice my tags were suspended until I provided "proof of insurance". Well, I do the "1 week insurance policy" thing on my infrequent jaunts to AZ, so only have valid U.S. coverage when I go there.
Has anyone been through this with AZ DMV?
Is there a "penalty" or "fine" of some sort when I do go back and attempt to get reinstated?
Will they accept a 1 week policy as "proof of insurance" given I have a Tucson address?
Do I tell them I "store" the vehicle at that address and do not drive it, hence the 1 week policy? Or perhaps the old "I travel a lot, so the vehicle is out of the country most of the time" dodge??
Of course I can simply ignore the whole thing and just hope I don't get involved in some incident that will land me in boiling water for suspended plates, but would prefer to not take that risk.
Just looking for some options as I simply will not buy a full U.S. insurance policy on top of my Mexico policy for only a few days use per year, but would like to keep my U.S. vehicle registration.
Ideas? Other options?

| This is the problem we all have. I think every state requires proof of insurance. In New Mexico we signed an affidavit that stated the vehicle was in storage. If you elect to ignore, they will fine you. I know not what the fine for Az. is but it was cheaper for me to carry liability only continuously rather that pay the fine. None of the states that I know of make it easy. The other problem is when you cancel your insurance it will be MUCH more expensive to "reinstate".

Go to the AZ DMV website. There is deinsurance form you fill out on line. Tell them the vehicle stays in Mexico. Then continue to buy your other one week insurance when you come up. You may have to go to a DMV office or mail the form in to make sure you clear up the cancel registration notice. I just did it for two vehicles I don't use in the Winter that stay at my Arizona cabin. In that case I told them they were in storage.

AZ DMZ told me they would invalidate the registration if I didn't send in the insurance info.
How much is a year's liability insurance, especially if you show the agent your mexico insurance? Progressive is pretty cheap.

When you "cleared up" your cancellation notice, did you get hit with any sort of penalty?

Thanks! will check them out. Last place I tried was like $600/year...I mean that is like $50/month I can use for Pacifico, after all

| Cleared Up? I never cancelled my insurance. In 25 years of doing this, cancelling my insurance never made any financial sense. You just have to jump thruough there hoops and lie through your teeth. We're not talking about any "serious" $ here. My liability is only 150 a year on an old beater.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood your comment:

He didn't say that, I did. I did the on line form before I canceled my insurance. There wasn't a registration cancellation issue. I don't think there is a penalty if you make it clear the vehicle is left in Mexico. I'm eventually going to leave a vehicle down there and do that. If they don't accept that I'll tell them the vehicle is in storage.

| Back in June I finally changed my registration from California to Arizona even though I am a full time resident in Mexico. In order to have a car registered in California you must hold at least liability insurance and I believe that is also true for Arizona. It's much easier for me to pay the $196 a year for liability insurance in Arizona than have to mess with all the other stuff (reinstating, lying about storage, worrying about getting caught, etc). Still, my paying my liability in the States along with paying for full car insurance coverage in Mexico is wayyy less that full coverage in the States. Well worth it to avoid all the hassles.
