My once postponed trip is now back on and I am back to pump you guys for any info you can give me about the route I plan to take.
We(4 guys) plan to depart South Florida in mid April and ride the Interstate( ), we have already toured the Gulf Coast, to the border entering Mexico at Presidio/Ojinaga using route 16 to Creel and the Copper Canyon. After visiting and touring the canyon it's off to San Carlos. One of my concerns is the availability of gasoline along this route. Any info you folks can pass along will be greatly appreciated.

You might check on ADV rider --

Ask about in the Rockies forum and the Desert Southwest forum. If you poke around some in this huge site, you'll probably find some ride reports about just the trip you are planning. Good luck; it sounds like a blast.

I've ridden around Creel and into San Carlos and been into Copper Canyon a few times, any questions fire away.
You can have 2 completely different experiences depending on what kind of bikes you are riding. If you have Dual Sport motos, going into the canyon is a must. With Cruisers, its still an awesome trip even not going all the way thru the canyon.
If you do want to take a couple days and go into the canyon, you can rent some 4x4's in Creel for a day or two, a stay at Batopilas, and a visit to the Santevo mission. Both are incredible experiences since you are already in the area. The guy who rents these in Creel is a great resource anyway. If I remember right, he's a Mexican national that rode a Royal Enfield around the world a couple decades ago.
Also, don't miss Basaseachi Falls which is West of Creel heading toward San Carlos.
And the ride from Basaseachi across the Sierra Madre puts 'the Dragon' or any other USA twisty-turny road to shame. What looks like a couple hundred miles on a map is ALL DAY LONG of 20-40 MPH mountainous curvy roads. If you're into it, its a motorcyclists dream.
Might also be fun to rent the Discovery Channel video Motorcycle Madness III. Jesse James and Kid Rock ride to Copper Canyon and then finish up in San Carlos. Its not a tour video and the first hour is Jesse building his moto, but still kinda cool to see the Mexico footage.
They also stayed at a hotel at Divisadero (not to be missed) which looks into Copper Canyon.
Also, don't let your buddies worry about security. Once you're thru the border, you won't have any troubles on the motorcycles from people... just gotta watch for road hazards.
Have you thought about entering Mexico further West? Dropping in south from Deming NM, then taking Hwy 2 south to Nuevos Casas Grandes and riding the Tarahumara highway is an awesome ride. Plus you can check out Paquime which is a very interesting archeological ruin. This was the center of trade between the Mayans to the south and more familiar US Indian tribes to the north (before international boundaries). This route has much lower vehicle traffic density, more interesting roads, and prettier scenery than entering further south and east thru Texas...
Anyway, just some thoughts to toss around...

| Also, MX Hwy 2 parallels the US border for a bit, so if you need to 'dash north' for anything, it is fairly simple to do.
