Last July we encountered something that never happened to us before at the Inspeccione Militar south of Benjamin Hill by the porcelainite plant. This was our first trip to San Carlos with our fifth wheel, which we pull with a GMC Sierra pickup. It's your basic truck/RV combo--not in the slightest way commercial. I pulled into the "Autos Solo" lane, as I had always done with a passenger car or private pickup, even when pulling our 28' sailboat. Evidently this was the wrong thing to do. My wife had to get out while the soldiers had me get turned around and go back through the "Vehiculos Carga" lane to the red light/green light booth. I got a green light, picked up the esposa, and we went on our way.
Of course, all of this was complicated because my Espanol is about at the "las cervesa, por favor" level, and the soldiers involved, who looked to be barely 18 and just off the farm, didn't speak a word of English. My wife was less than thrilled about having to wait on the curb through this process. At one point, I had to back our 33' fifth wheel down a diversion lane about 100 yards while they stopped the line of trucks to let me get in line. Oddly enough, after all this, other than a cursory glance inside the cab of the truck, no one ever looked inside the rig!
I will say that all of the soldiers were very polite throughout, though firmly insistent that something was haywire.
I really don't think this was a test to see if a gringo can back up a 33' fifth wheel trailer. Should we have used the "Vehiculos Carga" lane? Were we just dealing with some inexperienced soldiers? Anyone have any idea what was going on?

| Rules change by the day, hour, minute, second.... As a matter of fact, many years ago the same thing happened to me and I just got out and gave the keys to the guy and told him to back it up....... I was let thru.......

We had a similar experience at QueroBobi going north last july. after 2 1/2 hours with the young soldiers sitting in our motor home for most of that time, and pretending not to understand my spanish, they wanted us to turn around across the center divider gully and anyone who comes here knows it is at least 3-4 feet deep!! Finally after many tears and much pleading, they let us go up the road about a quarter mile and turn around and go back a mile and turn around so we could go through the radiowave machine and get scanned...all the time with 2 young military guys with AK 47's or the equivalent strapped across their chests sitting in our RV!!!
Almost had to be taken to the hospital after that one.
Of course we had nothing on board that was illegal.
