| I just hung up the phone talking with Progressive. They (according to the rep) offer NO coverage in MX for any size boat. Thanks

| i don't care what the agent told you. get a copy of the policy and read it like i mentioned awhile back. page 20 of the progressive boat and watercraft policy states that it will cover physical damage within any state, territory or possession of mexico, including costal waters within 75 miles of its coast. this does not afford any liability. that has to come from another policy or another source. i handled progressive insurance for 30 years and have had several claims in mexico. one of my clients sunk his boat about 4 years ago in Puerto Penasco and progressive paid for it. but like all american companies, the claim will be settled in america.

They don't offer liability coverage in MX. They do offer comprehensive and collision insurance in MX. The agent you spoke with is probably confused on that point. Call back or ask to speak to a supervisor. Chris Price is a knowledgeable person with them. He is a Customer Care Manager.
Here is the text from the Progressive policy that covers MX:

| would you really wamt a company as disorganized as progressive is ,where none of its represenatives can even agree on what coverages they offer to insure your boat.Imagine what a nightmare it would be when it came time to file a claim.also really odd they don't offer liability, but maybe if you call a few more times you'll find a rep that will say "sure we have that".

Honestly, Progressive is one of the few I've found that CLEARLY states the Mexico coverage provisions in the policy. Of course, you have to get an on the water liability policy in addition, but I'd personally rather deal with a US company in the event of a damage claim.

I hate to beat a "dead horse" but, how do I get a copy of a "current" Progressive insurance policy that states their coverage in MX? I'd then make a call to Progressive and have some information to read the agent. Thanks.

No it's not. Liability insurance needs to come from a MX carrier, per Mexican law.

JZ - You were correct! I had been asking the Progressive agent about MX boat coverage as if that's all that would be purchased. However, buying a Progressive US policy also includes physical damage coverage in Mexico if that is where the loss occurs. And, I assume it will cover damages occurring while towing the boatie from the border to SC. As you said, MX liability for the boat/trailer/truck is all that is needed if one buys through them

L&L, MacAfee & Edwards, International Gateway (IGIB),and Progressive, are all companies that offer OTW coverage in MX (Progressive as part of purchasing a policy for US coverage). I suppose there are others. Liability is easy to obtain via the SC web site. Try them all etc. then decide which offers the best coverage for the price. Thanks to all that helped with this process.

This is true. Your particular scenario will help guide you to find the best option. Progressive is more for someone that uses their boat in the US and takes it occasionally to MX.
I believe Lewis and Lewis is more for a trailerable boat that is under 28' (last time I checked). The one Bart mentioned I believe is better suited for larger boats (35' and greater?).

JZ - Well, I'll be there four months this winter so I hope a Progressive purchase is a good choice. My US policy was to be renewed soon anyway. So, two birds with one stone I hope. Thanks.
