I am going to Cancun on Tues. and was wanting to know if anyone has had any luck this time of year. Its my first time there and I dont know what to expect. We are staying at an all inclusive called the Valentine on the Mayan Riverra between Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Morelos near Cozumel. I am bringing a rod with me because I just cant help myself. I am hoping I can catch some from shore, but will probably hire a local panga captain to take me out. Any Ideas or recommendations would be cool! Thanks Guys Mike:)

I've fished out of Akumal several times which is a great little community south of Playa del Carmen.  There are a bunch of pangas for rent right on shore which you can rent for half day trips or longer if necessary.  Fishing is right outside of the reef which is 500 yds from shore with dorado, tuna, velas, wahoo.  Definitely take your own gear if you can as they are tackle and gear restricted.  Two 30's with 30-50# line would be perfect with some lures and skirts.  They have plenty of bait and always get excited with new lures to troll.  I think a half day is $160.  Puerto Adventuras is another option with bigger sport fishing boats for more money.  I recommend Akumal with the pangas.  I also travel with intent on leaving my tackle which will get you some quality fishing with great Mayan guides.  You could take down a couple of TLD 25 combos with some tackle and fish for a couple of days for free and make an enterprizing panguero more productive and appealing to future clients.

Hi Mike

I fished Playa del Carmen last April and had a great time jigging for amberjacks, the guy I went out with knows the waters and he did a great job putting us on the fish. He went straight from fish hole to fish hole, and If I reember correctly we had at least a bite on every different spot he tried. We ended up the day with * nice amberjacks and lost like 3 or 4. He has a big and comfortable panga and knows what he is doing.

His info:

send him an email, I'm sure he can help you

Thanks Guys!!! Keep the info. coming all this is good stuff. I am getting excited and am looking forward to my trip.

I left all my gear in S.C. so it looks like I will have to use someone that has tackle. I have been looking at the fishing charts to see what fish are available this time of year and it looks like mostly bottom fish along with barracuda and wahoo. I enjoy bottom fishing and inshore fishing almost more than trolling all day for Dorodo and sailfish anyway.

I do have some fresh water bass stuff and some chrome spoons and some jigs I might bring with me just for messing around with from shore or maybe a kayak. Anway, thanks guys and keep it coming!

Nice fish!! Think I could land that on a bass rod??  Mike:)

you might not land that one on a bass rod, but "baby" tarpon of 10-25# on a bass rod are about the most fun you can have with clothes on............

I fished with Captain Pio out of Telum.   He had very nice equipment and nice boats, and he keeps them at a nude beach frequented by very cute european girls.  Contact him at:  captainpio@hotmail.com

I'm not sure I'd bother going fishing if I could hang on a nude beach with cute girls

Mike,

Happy to report..... NO CRABS!!!!!!

We had a great trip. It was windy most of the time we were there, so no fishing for me.:( We stayed on the rivera maya between Purto Morelos and Playa Del Carmen at a 5 star resort named the Valentin. This place was unbelievable. I ate and drank so much, I think I gained 10 pounds. We are already planning our next trip!!

Now I am waiting for the yellowtail fishing to start in San Carlos!!

  Thanks guys for your responses.

  Again,  NOOOOO CRABSSSS!!!!      Mike:)

Mike,

Too bad about the pinche viento, but good thing on the crabs! PQ and I may try an early AM Island run for YT this weekend. :D

Does that make you "Crabless in Cancun"? ;)
