Hello,
Would someone please tell me the rules for dropping ones own mooring ball in the Bahia San Carlos, or anywhere in the area. Is it ok to do so? or...?
Any information would be appreciated.

You do so at your own risk, the government can come in any time and claim imminent domain and tell you to leave. This has not happened yet but sooner or later order will be brought to the bay. Also you need to have someone watch the boat. It can not be left on the mooring buoy during hurricane season or it may not be there when you come back. There were approximately 19 boats on the beach after Jimena.

So Vince, what did you do with your four or five boats during Jimena?

Move them into the marina usually 24 hours before the storm hits. I left two boats on the buoys this time and Namaste, our 23 footer broke loose in the last hour of the storm. No damage just a free bottom cleaning. If Rick comes here everything will come into the Marina but it is predicted to turn hard east soon. Of course if NOAA is off as much as last time with Jimena then we will get a direct hit.

Does that mean you have slips for them? That marina seemed pretty full when I was there. Or are there other "in marina" tie-up strategies for storms?

The marina has a lot of extra slips available and worst case scenario is you take the boat out of the water or go to new marina in Guaymas. bottom line is try like hell not to leave your boat in the Bahia unless you have all new ground tacke and you are sitting on it during the storm. What failed on our 23 footer was the swivel or a shackle.
