I heard some big live sardines are at Marina Real. Lots of little sierras (for fresh dead bait) inside the harbor entrance. My light went out when I went out at night. I think I saw mackerel though we didn't have any chunk bait, they weren't hitting the sabikis, and there were literally millions of small fish.

Tried the Island very briefly yesterday. It seemed that more fish were on the south end where the current was pushing up. It was probably the wrong time of the day. Great snorkeling though!

Before we had the spread fine tuned crossing the reef, a sail came in on the second wave. After the intitial hit the fish picked it up again and Reuben hooked it up. Nice big acrobatic sail. Not long after we picked up number two. Once again the fish didn't take on the initial strike, but came back again. Moved farther out in search of dorado, catching two and seeing others. Hooked at nice 33# fish on the way back from the island.

Where is our summer crowd? I know the CA schools aren't out yet. The water above Tortuga looks to provide legendary fishing right now if anyone is game for a multi-day charter. I also almost always have friends around looking to do a shared ride.

tight lines,

Last weekend I just stopped at one of the pangeros places before Marine Mart on right side by the shallow bay and paid them for fresh sardines (live), actually it was funny, I asked if they have live bait and the guy said yes, of course and he sends a young guy with a net into the water. Five minutes and five dollars later I have half a bag of sardines. Of course I didn't mind them dead but if you can some how keep 'em alive...

Next idea was to buy sabiki and just catch them this way or use my cast net...just need a bit more practice in my pool with it I guess.

Good luck

Andre

Unfortunately, it is against Mexican law for gringos to use cast nets. Usually you can find someone on the docks to cast one and come up with a bait tank full of mullett for about $10. Try going out just before light and the panga dudes are working their magic with their cast nets. I saw one guy cast over s achool of sardines and put over 100 of those little guys in his boat. I'd pay $20 for that!

A couple of tricks for keeping bait alive longer:

Dump some ice in your bait well.  It slows the metabolism down so the bait can live longer.

Put some Gatorade in the bait well.  I use the powdered variety.  I got this little trick from a lady who did her master's thesis on keeping bass alive in the live well which is important for tournament bass fishermen.

You can easily extend the life of baitfish for over a day using these methods.  An aereator is helpful also.

I believe she said it supplies nutrient and electrolites.  I've tried it with and without.  It works!  I use about 1/2 cup of Gatorade powder for 10 gal. sea water.  Ice is the best.  I've been using ice in my bait well for years.  It makes them kind of sluggish, but they perk right up after they're in warmer sea water.  They're also easier to put on a hook when they don't wiggle as much.

We use a bait bag that hangs off of the transom. Saltwater is constantly pumped into the bag keeping the water fresh. Fish waste and other toxins quickly build up in water that is not constantly changed. We can keep bait alive for days this way, unless you dock in Marina Real where the water will kill anything in a few hours.

My wife is a passport carrying Mexican.  Can she legally throw a cast net?  She would love to do it.

If she has a fishing license, I would think so.
