I know if you have a failed boat part you can take it back to the states and declare it on the Mexican side and then when you return with the new part you do not need to pay duty.  My golf cart was legally imported into Mexico.  I can get batteries from Sams Club in Tucson for half of the cost in Mexico.  I will look at Sam's Club in Hermosillo also.

My question is can I take the failed batteries to the states and return with new ones and not pay duty.

I have taken old batteries out of Mexico and returned with replacements with no problem.  However the past few times I have bought Mexican 6 volt batteries in Guaymas cheaper than I could buy Trojan 106 batteries in the U. S. and they are higher amp. batteries and have functioned without a problem.  Here in Colorado the 6 volt batteries at Costco are lower amp hr. rated that even the Trojan 106.  I would sure check around before lugging batteries across the border.

John

How would they know they were golf cart batts and not boat batts? Declare them as boat batts.

Where, specifically, did you buy your 6 volt batteries in Guaymas? Were they LTH's?

Yes they are LTH batteries and the last group I bought were at the LTH store I believe it is on Calle 15 about a block off of Serdan.  Nice people to deal with.

If you take the old batteries out there is a form that you get at Customs/Aduana same place you pay for bringing in stuff.  You fill out the form, they sign it and when you bring in the new ones, they are duty free with that slip. I can look up the name of the form if you are going to do this.  PM me if so.

I recently purchased batteries for my golf cart.  The were 6 volt deep cycle batteries at Sam's Club.  They were $67 each.  I tried to declare the old batteries on the way to the states at Aduana but since I was replacing them and not repairing them I could not avoid the duty in bringing new batteries into Mexico.

I researched several different ways to replace my batteries.  The LTH batteres are available in Guaymas for 1300 pesos.  With the current exchange rate they would be just over $100 each.  I thought I could declare the old ones and avoid duty.  I also needed to go to Tucson for Doctors appointments.  The LTH batteries would have been a better bargain without the hassle and cost of a 500 mile trip.

What was the duty on the batteries, Bill?

I went by the LTH store on 15th and they quoted me 1386 for one, cash price and a bit less for two.  I will probably go that route when I need them. Be advised that the LTH store observes the siesta hours of 1-3 each day.

The duty was 15%.  Of course you can deduct the $75 allowance from the cost of the batteries.  I used the actual cost of the battery minus the AZ sales tax.  So $67 each for 6 batteries.

Just got back from BatteriesPLus in Nogales. Here are some prices quoted:

Werker 6v (same rating as Trojan T-105)-96.00
Trojan T-125 180.00

Werker Group 31 12v deep cycle 89.00

Werker Group 31 12v starter 85.00

So the duty was 15% of 67.00 per battery, Bill?

I wrote that post right after I came back so I think it is accurate.  15% duty at that time.  I can't remember what I had for dinner last night so if I wrote that last October it is better than my memory.
