Hi
I am looking to drive to San Carlos from Phoenix in late March and early April. I have read all the blogs regarding travel by car and I am more confused than ever.
1. I know I need Mexican Auto Insurance.
2. I know I will be in country for 8-9 days.
Do I need a tourist visa for my car?
Do I need a tourist visa for me?
Do I have to stop KM21 and register my car and myself?
Someone! Please spell out exactly what I need or need to do.
I also have a passport that is no problem.
I am also renting a car to travel to Mexico with. Is that a problem. The car companies seem to think if I get Mexican insurance I will be okay.
Also the car companies want to charge $25.00 per day extra for Mexican insurance. Is that the going rate? Can I get is somewhere else for less?
What else do I need to know?
I have traveled all over the world except Mexico. I have rented cars everywhere except Mexico.
For a country so close it seems very confusing? I just want to do the right thing when I am visiting someone else's home (country).
Thanks for any help I can get.
Livin' in my suitcase!

Here you go-for more info see the travel page at http://www.sancarlosmexico.com

Do I need a tourist visa for me? Yes
Do I have to stop KM21 and register my car and myself? car-No, you-Yes

Make sure the rental contract clearly states you can take the car to Mexico.
Also the car companies want to charge $25.00 per day extra for Mexican insurance. Is that the going rate? Yes
Can I get is somewhere else for less? Maybe but the rental company is going to require it before they will give you permission to take it to Mexico.
Enjoy your trip

Just one addition to Bart's reply.
I know Enterprise, amongst some others, will allow you to take a car into Mexico if you get the Mexican insurance through them.
However, you do not need to get the US coverage through them, unless you want to.
My car insurance covers me for rentals cars in the US, so I normally decline coverage, but the Mex insurance can not be declined.
I once had the rental agency try to slip in the full US insurance pakage in with the Mexican one.
Mind you don't fall for this.
Otherwise, believe Bart covered your needs.
Have a safe and fun trip!
