Hi all, my buddy and I are plannig a trip down to San Carlos in January to stay for a few months, and this message forum has been extremely helpful in answering lots of questions.
We've got some cash saved up to buy a sailboat, but here's my question:
Are there many used sailboats in the 25-30ft range for sale in the 5k-10k price range in San Carlos?
I've been keeping tabs on boats for sale in San Diego for a few months, and there seem to be quite a few in that price range there (or even cheaper) that seem serviceable, but as far as online listings, there doesn't seem to be much in San Carlos in our budget. Is there perhaps an informal market of boats that aren't being listed online?
Trying to make the decision about whether or not to buy in San Diego and transport down, or head to S.C. and cross our fingers.
We're amateur sailors, but pretty experienced at jumping into strange international adventures. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,
Look at the price to transport to SC and add that to your budget - you will then be looking to spend at least 10K-15K. I had to come to this conclusion when looking at powerboats in that size range.

Thanks for the reply...
Not including cost of getting the boat on and off a trailer, I've gotten quotes as low as $1600 (and as high as $6k) for transport... Which makes hauling a boat down from San Diego still seem appealing.

That is quite a deal ($1600) - you'd best buy one there after looking at what is currently listed here.

Andrew, interesting plan. Mimics my own except you are going two months before me and w/ a buddy. Boat availability is my question as well. I've been assured by several unrelated sources boats are available down there, though I'm still wondering what I will find in the time frame (2 months) I have to play w/, considering I want to spend the time sailing, not shopping.
So I'd be very appreciative of you sharing your experiences w/ me (ldalbin@wildblue.net) as you hunt out a boat & do the trip so I can arrive better prepared, or else I can shop CA and get a boat to the Sea of C.
I'm a rookie and wonder what to expect, shopping for boat, outfitting a boat down there, ....
Have fun, you have a great idea!

I don't know if you are still looking for a boat but I have a Bristol 27 in La Paz that I have been thinking about selling. She is a great boat. I sailed her down from San Francisco a few years ago and liked Mexico so much I just left the boat there and would go down to sail whenever I can. I was just down sailing in November and was thinking of either bringing here back to CA or selling her.

What does she come with and what are you going to ask for her? I may know someone interested.

I'd be interested in hearing more about the Bristol (if it's still for sale)... We'll be in San Carlos or Baja by the end of the month, was planning on going through La Paz anyway. You can email me at andrew(dot)darezzo(at)gmail(dot)com.

I have a question, and Having a bit of back ground in of an about Mexico.
My Question is this . You find a boat to buy and the present owner has a Temporary permit for the boat to be in Mexico in HIS name . Where does that leave the new owner? Buying and selling foreign papered cars in Mexico has always amused me / confused me. On Cozumel it oftens seems to be more important who you know than what you know.

My understanding of the process is that the ownership is transferrable but the TIP is not. The purchase should follow the procedures of whatever agency issued the boat's registration or documentation and then armed with those documents the purchaser would obtain a new TIP in their name.
Maybe one of our boat broker members will come up on the net and address the process in more detail. Think it gets bit more complicated if the seller is a foreigner and the purchaser is a Mexican national and the boat has not been formally imported. A TIP is a temporary import permit allowing a foreigner to bring his boat into Mexico.
Hope that helps.

Having spent a bit of time on Cozumel I can just imagine how complicated things could get every time you raise the bar just a little , so to speak.
We am looking at coming down with our sail boat just to enjoy the weather and have a few cold beers and listen to the music . . .Right now in Chicago its -5
I are not looking at long term, 60 days . . .maybe a little more . I am looking around as well for an economico room to rent when we just want to get off the boat.
One thing is for sure . well at least from what I see on Coz and ZSee on this site .
Boats are not cheap to buy in Mexico unless there is a reason. If it sounds to good to be true it is! Cars and Boats are at a premium if they are worth having at all. That all being said from a Gringo's point of view.
