"Notify me by e-mail when replies are posted to this topic ", don't reply to the email notification.
Why? Those replies do not go to the person who posted or replied, but instead go back to the server and to me. You need to back to the thread and reply or respond as appropriate. Email replies to me in response to these auto notifications go in the trash and are not forwarded.
