We're traveling to San Carlos next week to survey a sailboat we hope to buy. If we buy it, we'll need to ship it from San Carlos to Seattle or somewhere nearby (i.e., Vancouver, Nanaimo, etc.)

We've looked into Dockwise and it seems like a great system but is pretty expensive - at least $12,000 to ship from San Carlos to Nanaimo, B.C., and they only ship twice a year. The next ship is in December, and if possible, we'd like to have the boat up here before then.

We heard that the only person trucking sailboats out of San Carlos recently retired and are wondering if anyone knows of other companies/people that provide boat shipping out of SC. I'm hoping there must be at least one more option.

All and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Word from our surveyor is that the shipping guy Marina Seca works with retired. My husband sent the guy an email asking for a quote and he never responded, so we're not sure what the deal is. Guess we'll try contacting him again.

We'll definitely check it out when we're there. As good as the Dockwise system sounds, I think it's considerably more expensive than shipping a boat, and we wouldn't be able to have the boat in Seattle until December. It's been an absolutely gorgeous summer here so far - very sucky not to have a boat! So we want to get one as soon as possible so we can start using it.

Yachtpath also ships boats...I believe from La Paz.  I have used them and they were terrific.  If you can get on as a last minute deal, you can save a considerable amount of money.  I think their web is http://www.yachtpath.com.  It is worth checking out.

Update: it turns out that Marina Seca does in fact still ship boats. We did end up buying the Island Packet 38 we came down there to look at (very excited!!) and are in the process of figuring out how to ship it to Seattle.

I think we probably will end up shipping it through Marina Seca - that seems to be the best option in terms of cost and scheduling.

I'll post about how it all goes. I've also been writing about our boat search, including our recent trip to San Carlos for the survey and haulout, on Three Sheets Northwest (http://www.threesheetsnw.com), an online boating magazine I founded with my husband. If you're curious, those posts can be found on the site under The Sailboat Search Chronicles.

Hope Jimena doesn't hit San Carlos (or our boat!)
