| I’m toying with the idea of keeping a cruising catamaran in San Carlos. It’s 47’ long and 25’ wide. Is there anyplace to keep something like this down there and what do you think it would cost? I know the width may be my problem, not the length.

Marina San Carlos has the big Marina Seca about a mile inland, and Marina Real has another dry storage yard near the marina. They're probably both on this San Carlos website.
Also along the south side of Guaymas harbor are a couple good commercial boat yards where I've seen a couple trimarans hauled out, and at least one looked like it was there for more than one season. I'm not down there now,
... but I bet some of the folks who are there now can tell you how to contact the Guaymas yards. I cruised my trimaran around the Sea of Cortez for years, and I ended up modifying a monohull trailer for doing quickie haul outs on launch ramps. It was only about 18 feet wide, but still too wide for towing on the roads.

Marina San Carlos sometimes acommodates multihulls with shallow draft. Another option is a mooring in Bahia San Carlos. There are several privately held moorings that are almost always available out there. As Pat said, Marina Seca Guaymas hauls multihulls. Not sure about Marina San Carlos if you do not have your own trailer. If you need any help, contact me at The Captains Club in San Carlos.

Pat & Mike,
Thanks for the responses. The boat I'm looking at is a Robertson & Caine Leopard, 47 foot long by 24 1/2 foot wide by 4 foot draft and 22,000 Lbs. . Something tells me trailers and dry storage are going to be out of the picture. Dry storage in the off season would be great if you think anyone down there can accommodate me, please let me know.
My reason for asking this is it's not easy to find a slip up here in the lower 48 that'll accomidate a 25 foot wide boat. If I can't find a secure slip for this thing, I'll pass on the idea altogether since it's my plan to keep it in San Carlos (I live in Arizona).
This isn’t something I’ll be doing right away but it’s in the plans if I can swing it in a couple years.

We have a 43' voyage norseman 430, with a 25' beam. So I feel your pain. We are currently at Marina Real...I believe they are the only ones who can accomadate you.
marinareal@prodigy.net.mx, Isabel, she will be able to assist you. We really like it there.
Marina San Carlos has only 4 slips wide enough for catamarans and they are on long term leases.
Neither Marina Real or Marina Seca in San Carlos can haul your boat.
The boatyard in Guaymas can haul it and has dry storage that is very reasonable.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance....

Stuart,
This helps a lot. As much as I love the room on a cat, I know it's a pain to find a place to keep one.
Thanks.

The Marina has new slips going in and will have space for a boat of that size, also since it is a production boat Marina San Carlos Dry storage will take it out of the water as well, they just about doubled their capacity recently, it is the old wood trimarans and cats that dry storage does not want to deal with, since many of them were left at the boat yard and were to weak to pull out of the water with the hydralic trailer and thus damaged on pull out. Aslo the boat yards in Guaymas could easily take it out of the water for you and there is a new marina in Guaymas that I believe has plenty of boat slips still available.
One other thing, you gotta invite me for a sail on it if you ever get it down here!!!!!!

Somebody's gota teach me how to fish a thing like this!
Thanks for the info, Vince. This is looking more promising all the time. When we splash this thing, we’ll implore you to join us! We’ll need plenty of help and guidance.
The cat is a long-term goal. We still have one in the nest so my wife and I aren’t quite ready to retire full time and make a commitment to a boat like this but we’re making plans. The cat is how we figure we’ll lure the kids back to visit us regularly.
In the mean time, I need to get down there and get a handle on the fishing and sailing in the SOC. Sometime this summer, I’ll drag the wife down there and we’ll meet then. I think it’ll be a good idea to see if she can stand being on the water for several days at a time without going postal. One of your boats would be the perfect venue. Do you charter them out with bodyguards? I’ve put the wife and kids through a couple sailing classes and they took to them pretty well but there’s a huge difference between a day on the water and a week.

Vince, are you sure about marina seca being able to haul a cat with at 25' beam and put into dry storage? They keep telling me no. Who can I contact?

Do you ever fish from your boat? What drew me to the Leopard was the deck on the back and the traveler overhead, something the Voyage shares.
If so, I'd like to talk to you about your technique.
Maybe I should start another thread about fishing under sail.

Well if Dry storage keeps saying no then I guess the answer is no, but I have seen some nice cats over there in past years.
As far as fishing under sail goes we do it all the time on our trimaran. Weather is important and if it is really nasty I won't fish but if the weather is good I will. When we get a hook up I either heave to to stop the boat or pinch up wind to slow the boat down as we bring the fish in. I have caught sail fish, sharks and many dorado over the years to name just a few of the species. Essentially if you are sailing you should be fishing as well!!!!
