Hi, Bob. I've done it more than 10 times in different boats. April is a fine time to head up the outside of Baja and up the West coast.
Or, maybe I should say, as fine as it gets. The prevailing northwesterlies are usually tapering down in April. They may be shut down totally in late May and June, July, etc, but then along the Baja you'd have to be looking over your shoulder for any tropical storm that might be coming up too. April sounds like a good plan.
I think going out toward Hawaii inorder to grab the Pacific High is a huge waste of time for this route. My husband wrote a book called MexWX: Mexico Weather for Boaters, and I took over updating it last year when he retired. We have several chapters about this route. Also, check out Capt. Jim Elfers book "The Baja Bash II" which is all about sailing (and powering) up Baja to the US West Coast.
Do you have WXfax or SSB to get reliable weather forecasts on board? What kind of boat? How far north do you need to get during next April?
