I'm going to be asking a lot of questions in the next month or so. Our plan is to put in at San Carlos, spend a couple days shaking the boat down then head north to Kino. Stopping along the way at a few anchorages. Then across to San Francisquito, the trip back south is in the works.
My first question is does anybody have waypoints for Choyudo or Los Corralitos? I have the Gerry Cunningham guide but there are no waypoints for those. Or are they so obvious even I can find them? We plan on stopping at San pedro then Julio Villa then one of the ones we are looking for then Kino.

I might suggest a handheld compass, real Navigation charts, and some practice in coastal navigation would be a good start. Coastal cruising with the gps is very easy but you should also practice Nav. skills the old fashioned way and use the gps to verify your position. If you GPS dies on you at least you have your charts and compass!! Google earth will give you all the gps coordinates you need and there are also some web sites as I reacall that list most all the major points in the gulf now.
Stay well clear of punta Baja when you venture up the coast, it really is incredilbly shallow there and extents way out from the coast.

We do use real navigation when we cruise, just looking for some numbers for back up in the handheld GPS. Dont have a chartplotter or anything like that.
As far as guides we have the Gerry and Raines books. We have chart #21008 but it is from 1875! Are more current charts available?

| There is a new guide available for the sea. It just came off the press this past week. It has great maps and lots of information. It will be a welcome addition to the library of any boat cruising in the Sea of Cortez. The authors are selling it right now at the Seattle boat show. I got the book and it's pretty good. The San Carlos side is a little lacking but the Baja side is well done. It appears they started writing about the Baja side then got tired or in a hurry to publish when they got to the San Carlos side.

Now seriously for a moment. I am about to buy a new Pickem up Truck.
Is San Carlos one of those places that to get to and launch at I am going to wish I had 4x4??
I will be driving down and all looks good enough till I get to Mexico where I have never driven, not in that section of Mexico anyway. Are there big hills? What about the launch ramps? Though from what I read I could hire it done with an onsite tractor or even a crane. . .Anyway 4x4 or not to 4x4

No, in fact San Carlos has a very nice ramp. There is also a crane that lifts up to I think 10 ton and I think it's around $60 each way. Well worth it to not put the trailer in the saltwater.
The drive down from Nogles is pretty easy. Just a few hills, just watch out for the "topes", speed bumps. Plenty of fuel and food along the way also. In fact I have a transfer tank in my truck and fill with diesel before crossing back into USA.

Hi Divecoz,
Any firm plans on when you will be in San Carlos? We plan to get there around March 17, and will be on the water for about 8 weeks. It would be fun if we crossed wakes somewhere along the way.

| Hey Chinook.....No , nothing firm at this point. We are trying to get some things together. As you have read on the other board I am rebuilding the cabin of Wind Wine&Song and New Galley area too. As you did so shall I , more water supply . I will put it under the rear berth as for me that area is useless anyway and maybe it will help raise the bow a little.
