What is the story on small GPS handhelds?
I see folks suggesting having one of these as a backup to one's regular GPS. Do all of these have the required maps or software (I obviously haven't touched one of these so don't know yet how they work) that will have the info I need for the Sea?

I have a Garmin eTrex Legend that I used to record my kayak fishing trips around SC. After a day trip, I transfer the data to Google Earth just for interest sake. The Legend uses AA batteries and does not have a charger. It will run on 12V via an optional cable. It has very minimal map capability- only shows major highway and shore line in SC. I really carried it as an emergency means of getting precise lat/long in case I needed to request assistance via VHF radio. Also, the display is hard to read in bright sunlight.

What kind of computer are you using?
I have a Mac with a Bluetooth GPS. $99 program that does all my navigation for me.

| I know people who are using their desktop computers on their boats. They compose their email onto a floppy and take that in to a internet cafe to send it off. No laptop to risk damage or theft on the trips into town. An inverter from a battery runs the thing.

I think you will need a Navionics chip to really get detail ocean data. Talk to JonJen or Catch-22 or someone who has one. The handheld GPS is probably only good as a backup for accurate Lat/Long data.

I've toyed w/ the idea of a desktop so am interested you mention it. Size and "containment" of the laptop seems it would be desirable, the flexibility to take a laptop ashore (I suspect a rare event) just a bonus.

Hey MxSailor,
So your Mac w/ Bluetooth GPS & $99 navigation program; what OS are you running, and is the navigation program separate from the Bluetooth GPS? What is the navigation program? Who makes the Bluetooth GPS? Mac laptop?
thanks,
