We are planning a trip across to Mulege in May.  It will be our first time so we are looking for advice on good anchorages from Tortuga on down to Mulege.  Also any advice on Mulege is greatly appreciated - where to eat, what to see, etc.

Thanks!

You will definetly want to check out Coyote Bay in Bahia Conception.  A very beautiful ancorage.  You can anchor off of Playa Santispac in Coyote Bay.  It is a very nice beach with some houses and a small cantina.  Although, I'm not 100% sure the cantina is still there.  You can catch a taxi into Mulege (15 mins maybe?).  There are also some very cool ancorages off the small islands in Coyote.  The cove at Isla Bargo is amazing.

One thing you need to be aware of if you attempt to enter Mulege is that it is extremely swallow.  There are rocks which are only exposed at low tide right in the middle of the channel.  You will definely need to study the charts closely and watch the tides.  You can med-moor at the little dock they have.  The trick is to stay on the right side of the channel fairly close to the shoreline, which is counter-intuitive.  Another danger is that the right side of Conception Bay is very shoal at the entrance.

One more great place is Punta Chivato.  It is a very nice ancorage.  It is just North-East of Mulege.

I don't think there is a strong weather ancorage off of Tortuga.

To learn more go to http://www.cruisecortez.com/concepcion.htm and/or buy Gerry Cunningham's guide books.

Forget looking at the "charts" for Mulege... the storms last season changed all that...

Don't go in without following a "local"....  If you have a sail boat,, stay out......

There are lots of small anchorages on the Baja side. I have stopped at many in the last 20 years.  Including Mulege... but remember... all charts and GPS maps are not well researched for the area. GPS’s are often off by several hundred feet.  Depths are often wrong. LOCAL KNOWLEGE is a must; there are always fishermen in the areas. Ask them. I have never been steered wrong by them.

Agree with you about the local knowledge.  Good heads up about the storm.  But disagree that all charts are not well researched.  Gerry Cunningham's are.

Anyway, post on the Baja Nomad's forum if you want lots more info.  Many people live in Mulege and around Conception that post on that board.  I'll ask the question about how much the storm changed the entrance.
