| Sail along the Baja shore to at least Loretto... then cross. I did the trip from San Diego last year in the last week of Feb.. we stayed along the Baja side to stay out of the waves until it was an easy reach accross.. took 12 hours from the shore just north of smith island for us.. but arrived at night so took much longer to get into the harbor........ if you have never been to San Carlos.. wait for daylight ,, there are some hidden dangers for the newcomer.. (just inside the west side of the entrance to the entrance) the gps maps are off by at least 1 mile so a daytime arrival should be planned.

True for Marina San Carlos. Marina Real could be entered fairly easily at night even for a first timer as long as you have a motor and it is not pitch dark. Finding a slip in the dark would be another thing. You could also anchor off the beach next to the marina in Algodones for a couple hours waiting on the sun.

Btw, you should pick up Cunningham's guide books if you don't have them already. They have chapters on passage making.
I personally would go up to Conception Bay before crossing over.

I would consider getting up to Punta Santa Ines, San Marcos Island or even Santa Rosalia before you cross. Getting that far north means you may not have to point so high to get to San Carlos. Especially if the wind has a more norhterly component, which is what we have been having a lot of lately here in San Carlos anyway.

We've had good passages to and from San Juanico and La Ramada. The advice recommending hopping north along the Baja as far as Santa Rosalia is very sound, too. The more easterly you can point, the more comfortable your crossing.
