First, you've got a great messgae board. It's been a great help in our plans. We are doing long range planning for February or March of 2008.

Marina Real sounds like it's a lot quieter than Marina San Carlos. True or False? Both marinas are part of the same management group, but are their rates the same? Grupo Caballeros apparently doesn't answer e-mails since I've tried asking them twice.

Aside from the distance to town is there any significant downside to Marina Real? We'll be trailering an O'Day 272 down from Wisconsin so we'll have a vehicle at our disposal.

We're inclined to look at March since it's a bit warmer. I'm reading that average highes are in the low to mid 70's, with low's in the mid 50's- True or False?

To the subject of winds: I've read that 20 knots or better are not uncommon, but what would be considered the average? Predominant direction? Typical wave action? I have roller furling and two sets of reef points, but I'rd rather not work too hard.

Last question for now. Is San Carlos beset with Spring Break Madness in March?

Thanks

Tio

A few thoughts and opinions regarding your questions:

Marina Real is probably quieter.

Both Marinas are not part of the same management group that I am aware of.  Check the home page for direct email access to each marina.

I have a boat at Marina Real and I don't believe that Marina Real is as well maintained as Marina San Carlos but if the price is better and you have transportation Marina Real is fine for a few days/weeks.

The Temperature averages you have (70's and 50's) sound about right.  Water temps. will be in the mid 60's.

Typical winds in March will be from the Northwest to North and may be light in the morning building to 20+ in the afternoon and evening.  You will find a lot of 3' to 5' short chop especially from Punta Doble and Punta San Antonio on north.  When the wind gets above 15 and if the tide is running north and the wind is blowing from the north two reef points and and roller furling will not equal a comfortable ride in a 27' boat.  We are talking nasty conditions sailing to windward.  In March we will still be under the influence of the "Four Corners Highs"  which can cause very strong north winds for two to three day periods day and night.  When this happens you can still have good sailing in the bay off of San Carlos.

The two weeks around Easter (Semana Santa) are two of the busiest weeks in San Carlos.  You will find many Mexican Nationals, Students and Tourists all coming to the area for a holiday.

I would suggest you come on down and give it a try but be a little flexible regarding your sailing plans.

Hope this helps and I am sure other forum members will have more input and better advice to share

Regards,

John

The only thing I might add to Johns excellent post it that San Fransicito bay, by marina san carlos, it a much lager bay to sail in than Algodones bay, by marina real. The big advantage to Sailing out of the marina San carlos is that you can go out and have some nice big waves to sail off shore and then come in to the bay and have really flat water and still pretty good wind to sail in. the other big advantage is that there are more spots to anchor and more islands to visit.  The down side of Marina San Carlos is you really have to watch the low tides, I saw somebody just a few days ago put their monohull on the ground in Marina San Carlos. They were able to kedge off and get to the fuel dock and wait for a higher tide to get to the slip. I am not sure what the depth is at the Marina real at a very low low but in the marina san carlos if you draw more than 4 feet you can bottom out pretty quickly on the low tide in winter. In summer the average tides are much higher and never really a concern.
