My wife and I are taking a trip with a local dive shop (near Phoenix AZ) the last week of May. I have heard a lot of talk about safety in Mexico in general, and some have even said it is a poor time to travel south with current drug / government turmoil.

I really want to dive San Carlos (will be our certification open water dive) but need to feel safe when leaving our two young boys for a week to head south.

This has been discussed at great length on the San Carlos forum. The general consensus among experienced travelers is there is really nothing to fear but do use common sense. Avoid driving at night due to road and traffic hazards, don't drink and drive, obey the speed limits and stick to well traveled highways like Mexico 15.

Tourists are not a target for the drug cartels and the number of tourists who have no part of the drug trade who have been killed or harmed as a result of the cartel problem is zero.

Travel to San Carlos is a breeze. I will be diving there The week of the 11th so Ill let you know what the water conditions are like. Dove there for years and Love it to death! youll want to go back for sure.

Are you doing a bus trip or caravan ?

Have you ever been out of the states?
