Hi, coming down in mid-Feb for the first time. I dove Cabo about the same time a few years ago and the temps and viz made for a disappointing dive.
My dad & I are both advanced certified, but it's been about a year since I dove. If you have just one or two days, what are the must see sites around SC? Perhaps a good warm up novice dive to get my bearings before maybe a nice drift or deep dive?

We aren't die-hards, so should we even bother this time of year? We don't mind the mid 60's - we're used to it with all the Midwest lake diving we've done, but if viz is poor, I'd rather not waste my time/money!

Thanks!

Great warm up dive location is Martini Cove, just outside the channel entrance at Marina San Carlos.  Shallow and viz is usually pretty good unless the water is super rough.  Good spot to get your dive procedures back to snuff.

Other spots we like are on the east side of San Pedro Island at the light house and coves north and south of that.  Some nice walls to cover, usually some sea lions around to play with, etc.  North Point can also be a great dive but currents can be pretty strong so be prepared.

Window Rock is a popular dive spot but I've yet to dive it when viz was really good. It's exposed to wind and waves so viz can be reduced enuff to detract from the dive experience.

The local dive operators all know which locations to dive given current circumstances, so pick one.

Jim,

If you don't mind the cool water, if the weather is calm, try and make it out to San Pedro Island.

The operators, that Bart gave you the link to, will pick a spot out of the current, so is not an advanced dive unless you want it to be.

Visibility is a roll of the dice this time of year, as Bart said, but it doesn't require great Viz to enjoy a dive with the Sea Lions, which are a guarantee.

Would suggest you bring your gear, if the weather looks good, drop in to El Mar, Ocean Sports, or one of the other operators and see if they have a boat going out to the Island.

Good luck!

Hi Jim:

From looking at your question from January, I thought would give you an update on the current diving conditions as your trip to San Carlos draws near. The water temp is currently averaging about 64 degrees, and the best visibilty has consistently been out at San Pedro Island. Viz has been ranging from 30-50' depending on the day. Viz along the coast has been marginal 10'-20'. So I would suggest going to the island as well during your stay in San Carlos.

Thanks, Mike. One of your guys - or perhaps it was you? Spoke to my father last night at the meet & greet at Premeir Vacation Club. We're looking at the Thursday trip if everything lines up for us.

thanks for the info

No Problem, Yes it was me that spoke to your father. I spoke with him yesterday too. I think you will have some fun dives on Thursday.

If you are staying the Premier Vacation Club, there is some fun shore diving right out in front of your condos. Its not deep, usually in the 8-20' range, but I've seen sea-horses, eels, nudibranchs, plenty of small fish, octopus and more just by walking right into the water in front of your place.

Doh, too late - we left SC on Saturday!

We did take the Ocean Sports trip to San Pedro on Thursday. Conditions we chilly, but overall pretty good.

Vis in the 50-60 ft. range, one curious seal swam with us on dive #1 - very cool, and temps hovering around 60 - 62 surface, 59 at 50 ft, IIRC.

The air temps didn't lend to much warming up between dives, so Dive 2 was chilly, but nice. The crew and divemaster were great - took care of everything and no worries. I'll definitely recommend Ocean Sports to anyone who asks.

My only complaint... What's with those pink hoods!!??
