Am coming down for first half of June and would appreciate info on conditions . . . it seems like those great postings by Surface Time and others came to a screeching halt (thanks mucho, SirDiveAlot) . . .

Is there another location for info?

Any way, you might want to check Desert Divers site, or I will be there Friday, and we will diving (Hopefully)

We want to take our regs in and have them serviced on friday so , I will try to find out.

Thanks, Divegirl.  Too bad Micki left.

If you have time, please correct me where I'm wrong -- haven't done much SOC:

1) Men of war come in sometimes during June when the wind blows from the south, but they're rarely thick enough to trouble divers as long as you look where you're going when entering water or surfacing.

2) First half of June is likely to give 80 degree or so water until a thermocline at 7 to 12 meters, when you're likely to see a 5 degree or so drop.  (I don't wear a wetsuit but can handle mid 70s.)

3) San Pedro is the best diving near SC, but vis and currents vary widely.  Is there a second-best site that typically offers decent vis, mellow currents, good tropical fish, gorgonians and diversity in little critters like crabs, seahorses, nudibranches?

4) Do you work with Desert Divers or just dive with them?

Thanks so much for the info.

Hi Divers,

I have been diving locally the last 3 days and here is what I am happy to report.

Temp is between 68 (burr) and 71 (better!) and vis is about 25 to 30 feet.   There is lingering sargassm and that means lots of inverts to be found.  One of my divers came upon a rock at St Nicholas island with over 40 nudibranchs!  What a find!  We stopped counting at 14 different species of nudibranchs this trip.  We also saw loads of butterfly fish and rays.  It's been windy for the last few days, and since it's coming from the north again, our surface intervals were chilly!  Lots of sunshine though, so it should warm right back up.

We're doing a night dive tonight and San Pedro this weekend...so we'll have more to report shortly.

YEAH!!!

ERICA is BACK, she is the best source, and if you want the best trip that I have had in San Carlos go with Surface Time.

I DO NOT WORK FOR DESERT DIVERS, Nor do I DIVE WITH THEM.  I did that once.

and this is all I will say about that...  (IF you don't have anything nice to say, then say nothing at all)

Most of your information is pretty good, we have never had a problem with the Man a war.  We see them but they usually can be avoided when I have seen them.

Read the past post through out this web site, it is the best source for information.  Other sites just don't give the hands on information.

You can also check out EL MAR, they have been great with us when we rent air for shore dives, and purchase items.  I heard they bought a boat, does anyone know for sure.

Welcome back, Erica

El Mar does have a new boat, a 36' Newton Dive Special, Piesquita.  Read all about her at http://www.elmar.com/Mexico/boats.html.  She is in San Carlos now.

Thanx

Erica --

Thanks for posting all the info.  Nice find on the nudis.  I love those things not only for their beauty but cuz when I take a picture they actually stand still for it!

Sounds like you're the best to dive with, so I'll hope to see you the first two weeks of June.  But please tell whoever's in charge down there it's time to warm up the water!

Divegirl --

thx for your help.  I will definitely try to dive with Erica.  Sorry for impugning your reputation with the mistaken DD association!

Hi Again,

We had some more wonderful dives to report...although water temps were actually COLDER!  We went to San Antonio's point, and got bette vis (approx 40 feet), but also 66 degrees.  Not to worry though, when the water is all mixed up like it is (warm, cold, cold, warm...) the warm is on it's way.  Soon we'll all be wishing for thermos to cool off!  Went to Window Rock too, and my DM candidates found the window, and enjoyed the cool swim through.  We have an invertebrate expert amongst us...so it makes for fun diving, as he's always pointing out cool creatures that you may have not even noticed otherwise.  Yes, we've seen those big, beautiful, white jellies that people are talking about finding washed up on shore...we've got out our jelly book and are trying to make a positive ID (jellies are one of the hardest things to ID by the way).  Anyway, looks like super calm waters this morning, and we're off to San Pedro for some playtime with the sea lions!

I'm heading down on May 23rd for my first dive trip.  I'm told the water warms up quickly, but I'm worried.  I'm praying for 75 plus degree water so I don't turn into a popsicle.  Any advice or ongoing updates would be much appreciate.

San Pedro was great.  Vis at the Waterfall was 35 feet or so and water was 72!!!  The lighthouse was 50 plus feet vis, but cooler...66.  We also saw some huge guitar sharks (remember they are rays...same family) and ELECTRIC Rays too!  Beautiful beautiful beautiful....I'm hoping my Digital Underwater Photo students get on here and post some photos soon.

Water can be expected to get 2 degrees warmer per week from here on out.

Happy Diving!
Erica
