I guess nobody heard anything about it???? I was reading the obituaries in the Arizona Republic Thursday and one of them said that this person passed away March 22, 2008 while scuba diving in San Carlos, Mexico. Just curious if anybody knew what happened. It was a man in his fifties from Phoenix AZ.

I read about it in the Guaymas paper, but there has been no chatter about it at all on the forums that I read.

It was the first fatality of Semana Santa.

The Guaymas paper just said that they were deep water diving, had some sort of equipment problems, and drowned. Was rushed to the beach to a waiting Rescate ambulance where attemts to save him failed.

I heard the guy's wife wasn't feeling well and stayed in the hotel room.  he went out with a dive master and got separated.  His computer indicated he was down about 80' and panicked.  Shot to the top with breath held.  Took two boats to get him ashore and died before they got him to the marina. :(

The incident occurred at the Island, nobody knows exactly what caused the diver to shoot up, but it is essentially what happened.

To my knowledge, cause of death is drowning and there's no evidence of an embolism.

Reports suggest there was no wrong doing by the dive boat crew or dive shop staff from Phoenix that had the charter, just an unfortunate freak accident.

Mike Huhn from Ocean Sports came to assist with the Ocean Spirit, bringing the diver aboard the Spirit to commence CPR and had the foresight to call for one his fast boats from the Marina to bring out the Paramedics, so they could meet them on the way back and get medical assistance faster.

Unfortunately, it was not enough and the gentlemen passed away some time on the way back to the dock.

PS - The diver was not diving from the Ocean Spirit, they just happened to be near by and would prefer to leave the names of the more involved parties out of it, as I don't believe they were at any fault and don't want people jumping to conclusions based on association.

A tragic diving accident, thankfully rare in the sport!

Thanks for clarifying.  We all know how rumors get started and it is nice to have someone come forward and give the real deal.  I agree with you in that these accidents are few and am thankful for that.  We just all need to be on our toes and keep in mind the seriousness of the sport.  Watch your buddy and dive the plan.

Well, somebody breaking the surface after a rapid ascent, calling for help, going unconscious and dying is a textbook example of an AGE (Aterial gas embolism).
Drowning is the catch all cause for pretty much any dive accident. I believe the cause of death was listed as asphyxiation anyway.

We knew the man who died and he was truly a gentleman in his life and his proffession.  We were so sad to hear of his passing as we had been in San Carlos just months before.  He is sadly missed by all who shared his proffession.  Too sad, but just be careful while out there.
