I have been looking at San Carlos as a possible dive trip. I live in San Diego California and am looking at possible travel options. What is the best time to dive? I was thinking March or April for possibilities.
I have been told that there are dive bus trips that leave from Tucson. Is this a dive club? Does anyone know?

Diving in San Carlos is great year round...but March and April can be a little green with plankton blooms as the water begins to warm up. This also means whales and mantas in the area though. You can expect waters to be just a bit warmer than San Diego during the spring (approx 65), but they won't yet be really warm like summer. Most people think October is the best month here, as we have warm waters (70's), warm, but not super hot days, and you have a good chance of catching the hammerheads schooling at San Pedro Island.
Many shops in Arizona have bus trips down to San Carlos. There is also great bus services from Tucson and Phoenix, that you can take anytime. (see this websites travel info for more).
Happy Diving!

We have done family dive trips to San Carlos for last 10 yrs or so. Usually dive san Pedro or the normal dive sites around San Carlos. We have made the trip a few times over to Tortuga and Mulege. Does anyone have great dive sites they would recommend North of San Carlos along the coast or unusual sites you have found?

Clay,
I had found a map listing the dive sites. I think it was linked from one or more of the dive operators web page. If I see it again I'll post it.

Thanks for map. Do you have the GPS numbers for the Albatun and Diaz Ordaz wreaks. Those of you that have dove both do you like one over the other?

The tuna boat is located at approximately 28° 2.55' N, 111° 13.74' W.
Will someone please post the numbers for the ferry? I'll repost both as a sticky since this question gets asked frequently.

Hi Bart,
I have a minor correction to your above post.
The Ferry wreck is located at approximately 28° 2.55' N, 111° 13.74' W.
Sorry, I don't have the Tuna boat wreck coordinates.

We dove the wreak last week. It has certainly seen better days but is still a fun dive. I went to the GPS coords, anchored just off and headed the direction my GPS said. Just missed it and used good portion of our air before we found it. Good lesson is use the GPS but if you have a depth finder pinpoint it exactly prior to going down. I didn't think it was that important and paid for the mistake. Slight change in the coordinates might help also. I had it at 28° 2.546' N, 111° 13.760' W.
We also dove the sea mount for the first time. Nice and calm, with no current (which I hear was unusual for that site). Really liked the dive, it was different than the island and our usual spots. I would certainly recommend it.

Clay,
What kind of fish were on the wreck? Anything worth catching? I've considered trying to fish the wreck in the past. About 65 ft. deep?
Thanks!

We didn't see anything of any size on the wreak. Maybe 4-5 pounds was th biggest. Not sure if it was wierd time or not, because I expected to see more wildlife around it. I had burned alot of air by the time I got back to the wreak so I only had a few minutes there so didn't get to look inside much.
