Hello, all. I made this thread to talk about diving in June.
If you want to check the diving conditions in April and May, check this out.
http://sancarlosmx.mywowbb.com/forum3/2671.html
I usually dive with my students and tend to pick same locations which suit courses.
So, I would love to share the information about various diving sites with you all!!!
Anybody who dive San Carlos in June, please post the diving conditions here!!!
Thanks
Date: June 1, 2007 Location: Martini Cove Weather: sunny
Water Temp: 79F Viz: 40 - 10ft Current: None
We did PADI Rescue course there. When we arrived, the water was pretty clear but in this rescue course we pretty much stayed on the surface to practice several rescue skills like rescue panic diver or rescue unresponsive diver and so on.
By the time we practiced "search missing diver", the visibility got pretty bad. I would say it was less than 10ft which was good for our training. It was around 11am.
Date: June 1, 2007 Location: San Nicolas Weather: sunny+wind
Water Temp: 79F Viz: 10ft Current: mild ( strong at the south)
Time In: 12:44 Time Out: 13:19 Max Depth: 35ft
After the training, we all still had lots of air and decided to do some FUN dive.
San Nicolas is a small island and the rock is covered with white bird dropping. It looks like snow!
West side of the island, lots of big rocks and some rocks creat swim thru.
The depth is 30ft along the island and getting deeper when you are going west away from the island.
East side of the island, rocky gentle slope along the island and sand area.
You could swim all the way around the island sizewise but I didn't as there was very strong current at the south. We stayed west side.
I like San Nicolas even though the visibility is pretty bad, because there are always lots and lots of fish. We saw big schooling Wavyline Grunt, Cortez Angelfish, Flatworm, Stingray and more....
There are many Damselfish which are taking care of their eggs on the rocks.
The eggs look purple or gray. Please mind your Fin kicks!!!

Date: June 4, 2007 Location: Lalos Cove (from the shore) Weather: sunny+wind
Water Temp: 77F Viz: 15ft Current: None
We did PADI Open Water Diver training from the shore today. Beautiful weather but a little bit windy and surf gave us a bit of difficulty to get in and out of water.
I wore 5mm full wetsuit and it was perfect for me( i am VERY cold natured)
One of my students wore 3mm full wetsuit and it was also perfect for her.
still there are thick sargassum in spots but much less than last month.
It will be gone soon. Personally i am really looking forward to it.
Today we saw COOL stuff !!! I wish i had my underwater camera.
We saw Devil Ray !!!!!!!!!! It looked just like small version of Manta Ray.
It was at least 4 foot + long tail.
And we saw Tiger snake eel, cortez round stingray, pacific porgy etc..........

thank you for reading our post !!
(Divegirl, thanks for your warm message always! Please stop by our shop when you are in san carlos. we really want to know who you are!!!)
Date: June 15, 2007 Location: Martini Cove Weather: beautiful
Water Temp: surface81F bottom77F Viz: 10ft- 30ft Current: none
1st Dive: 16:39 - 17:17 2nd Dive: 17:59 - 18:43 Max Depth: 35ft
We dove Martini Cove in the afternoon. In the shallow water around our boat, the viz was really good and water temp was sooo warm. Some divers dove with only swim suits and it was not really good idea. They got stung by something( I didnt see any jellyfish) When we go to deeper than 25ft, the water was cold all of a sudden(but still 77F!!)and the viz was getting worse and worse.
2nd dive, after we finished all skills of Open Water course, my student divers' family joined us and enjoyed underwater tour together. We saw LOOOOOOOOOOTS of stingrays. Free-swimming green moray eel, schooling Surgeonfish, balloonfish etc...

| I agree with DiveGirl, this an incredible service you are providing Surface Time! My family and I will be in SC July 13 thru Aug 11. We dove with you in March and will hopefully be diving with you several times during our upcoming stay.

Divegirl, it was good to see you and dived with you !!
Brad, thank you for your message. we are looking forward to diving with you in July!!
Date: June 21, 2007 Location: Lighthouse (San Pedro) Weather: sunny+wind
Water Temp: 81F Viz: 30ft Current: mild
It was windy day and a little bit rough trip. Our captain considered going to North Point, but decided to check Lighthouse out first since we had some snorkelers too. Lighthouse is great point for snorkelers too because lots of sealions are hanging out and lot of fish you can see from the surface like King Angelfish and scissortail damselfish.
When we got to the huge sand area (50ft), we found a lot of holes on the ground. They were about 15 inches in diameter. They are the nests of Triggerfish. Many of them were empty then we found several triggerfish on the nests protecting their eggs. Their territory extends in a cone shape from the nest to the surface and they get really mad at and chase any intruders including divers. If you accidentally get into their territory, you should swim away holizontally. Don't swim upward.
We always moor our boat right in front of the area where sealions are hanging out. Everytime i go there, i dive and play with them which is really cool !!

WOW, it's sure been a windy week, for the most part. That seems to always be the case for the week of the 4th of July. We did make it out to San Pedro a couple of times, and found vis to be about 40 feet. Locally we are at about 25 feet. I hear that waters are green out further, so we may get one last plankton bloom. The jellyfish are back. So far, the number are managable and they've been fairly easy to avoid. There also seems to be a foamy particle filled layer at the surface of some sort of biological something. Vince is going to ask a local biologist, but it appears each year at the same time as the pacific man of wars...could be the sargasm breaking down...more on that soon.
Good news is the water is WARM. We are consistantly getting 84, although a diver told me yesterday that out at the window they found a patch of "freezing" (are we spoiled or what!?) 76 degree water. Ahh, summertime, sometimes I hope for a thermo and some cool temps!
Anyway, this wind hasn't stopped our fearless Divemaster candidates and Rescue student...they are out there diving hard.
Don't forget to sign up for your DAN courses....making strides in becoming a safer, better prepared diving community.
We are looking at putting together a macro photography dive group to go out in the next couple of weeks. Our in house photo expert Miki will lead, and Gustavo from Discover Sonora will also be on board. Call us if you are interested in participating! Should be fun, as they are looking for the teeny tiny, hard to find, once in a lifetime findings....you could be right there with them!
