Hello Again,

My wife and I have our R.V. stored in S/C (which we are considering renting out to Tucson divers when we aren't there) we've been down a couple of times diving recently, and I caught this bug.  Stupid me, I put in a bid on a 28 ft. Chris Craft in San Pedro Ca. and I won!  She's a power boat, and I apologize if I put this in the wrong forum, but it was diving or sailing, and well I'm a diver not a sailor.....yet:P

Now the three big questions......  with one little on at the end.

#1 Should I bring it to S/C, or keep it's inexpensive slip ($225 a mo.) in Ca. for cold water fun? (I really want my wreck cert, and have been dying to hit the San Diego area) But the idea of going where I want when I want in S/C is appealing too.

#2  What are moorage availabilities like versus dry storage in S/C, if I was to bring her down (I hear slips are $$ and in short supply) but the latter, I could bring my 40Ft. 5th wheel home if I put her in a slip with power (and just live aboard when I'm ther)?

#3 If I bring her down, since I doubt the trip on her own bottom is practical, who should I use to transport her (wood boat btw I'd like minimal out of water time for shrinkage)?  I've got my own Semi tractor (I pull my 5er with it, long story), but alas no trailer I could haul her myself on, anyone rent these?

I'd appreciate any input you could offer.

Thanks

Jim

I'll try and get you pointed in directions to get the info you need and hope others will chime in.  Think this might do better on the fishing forum in terms of getting answers cuz more boaters hang out there-we'll see.

#1-Not really a question others can answer for you-guess it will depend on where you would get the most use of the boat.  That slip price in CA does sound very good based on what I read in the magazines about scarcity of slips in CA.

#2-Visit the Marine Services page on the main web site to get info on slip fees at both marinas.  Because she is wood hulled, I assume you will leave in the water unless pulling to do maintenance.  Think slip is critical to allow shore power to keep bilge pumps up, etc when unattended.  You might also want to consider hiring someone to keep an eye on her when you are away-Surfacetime offers this service and there are independent captains around who can also do it.  You might also ask the insurer about difference in rates if unattended-may be surprised at the difference a licensed Capitan will make.

#3-Marina Seca dry storage offers yacht transport services and can help you make arrangements. Boat would need to be hauled to Tucson and then loaded on to their transport.  They can also launch her and haul her if need be later.  They are on the marine service page too. Not sure why you would need a trailer if keeping her in the water.

I do not know of anyone who rents trailers per se but maybe someone has one they could rent to you.  Can your tractor pull a conventional trailer or does it have to be a fifth wheel?  What is the beam on the boat?  What does it weigh? What is the length overall?  Is it straight inboard or I/O? Single screw or twin? All factors to be considered in trying to find a trailer that will hold her safely and securely.

Hope this helps
Bart

Bart,
Thanks for the good information, I wasn't thinking about the bilge pumps and the wood hull.  I guess solar panels probably wouldn't keep up with that.  Or like you said, moore it and have somebody babysit her.

The beam is 10' according to the auction, and she's 28ft is all I know.  I am hoping to go check her out this weekend and get more specific figures, weight I have no idea what she dispaces at this point.  I'd imagine though, since the beam width etc, it's going to need to be a lowboy style trailer.

I'm putting a class 3 hitch on my tractor, so I could feasibly pull a tag type trailer in a few days.

Let me know if you come up with any suggestions, or someone willing to rent or let me use a big trailer for a couple of days.  I'm going to think about the slip, yes it does seem cheap and the marina is full in San Pedro, the good news is I think I have a little time before it has to move.

Thanks
Jim

Fear you're probably going to have you're work cut out for you getting the new boat ship shape.

Much easier and cheaper to work the bugs out while still in the US.

You got lobster season coming up in CA and the best time of year for diving.

I'd suggest you keep her there for the reasons I mentioned and perhaps consider the move spring of 07.

Good luck!

Well I've made two trips to Catalina Island in the "Hydra" and I think i have the major bugs at bay.

She needs some bottom work (bow bilges more often than I'd like) but all in all she's got more suprises for me everytime I visit her (more good ones than bad).  She seems to cruise about 8.5 knots, and I've had her up to 15-16 knots and I need to tune in the new carb a bit for more.  Fixed a bunch of little things, and a couple big things, but I can say I feel comfortable with her now.  Heck I went to and from Catalina the last trip on 40 gallons of fuel! (works out to about 1 knot per gallon, I guess a heavy boat like this one that's normal?)

Now I just need to figure out how to get her to SC and who and where to repair and store here there.  My wife want's me to sell her (since she's worth more than I paid) but I keep finding little jewels some owner installed that makes me want to keep her more and more.

Thanks for all the help here... I'm hoping to be on her bottom soon in another country!

:D  Such problems to have.....all good ones.  Do you have a trailer that will handle her?  For the tow there that would be my biggest concern.  Since so many trailers that size are ussually commercial, the private ones tend to sit around neglected.  I do have a friend with one that has hauled up to 35x10.  I know I could get it.  Maybe I could help you work something out.  Not sure how all the paperwork stuff would work out.  I've been wanting to go down SC way again this winter.  I've got a new truck that would haul it.  Fellow diver.....Good luck 408-568-2376 ken.

You know that at 10' it considered oversize. You will need permits to haul her from CA , AZ and I do not know what is needed for entry into MEX. I would suggest contacting a company that would do oversize from US to MEX

You can get a wide load permit easily by contacting Caltrans.

Simple process, 1 week permit cost me $16.00

Covers you through CA and AZ.

I hauled an 30 x 11' beem, didn't do anything for permits in Mexico, nobody said anything.

The toll booths were a bit of a challenge, but got through it.

Catalina and back on 40 gallons seems pretty good to me.

Good luck!
