What heading was that 73 temp. on?  We went out to 32 miles on a 180 heading on Monday and could only find 69.8 tops.

Does anyone know what the seas are like today?  (Wed)

Joe - Monday the 73 degrees was about 50 mile at 150, but you should have seen 70+ starting about 18 miles at 180. I have a new temp sensor coming after consensu in the fleet last Saturday showed my unit reading 3 degrees lower than everyone else.

BuoyWeather is showing 2-3 ft swell today - much bigger in the morning at 4-6 ft.

Last shot on Terrafin was cut short by clouds - no reading in SC. Yesterday's AM shot showed 70 degrees at 15 miles from 150-230 degrees - no real warm areas except at 50 miles between 140-165 there is some 73 degree water. From what's there, 180 from 20 out to 35 miles looks like it is as fishy as anywhere.

Good Luck!

Joe,

Today's Terrafin just showed up and the 6AM readings are MUCH cooler than yesterday. Go 180 for 25 miles to hit the 70 degree water - 71 degrees at 30+.

There is lots of area not shown, due to cloud cover, but a few little "hot spots" in closer - take a look at 14 miles @ 180 and tell us what you see! Theres a reddish dot that indicates 71 there.

Probably a good time to remind the fisher folk that if you don't have a subscription to Terrafin's SST, this might be a good time to sign up.  An annual subscription is just $99.  Considering the price of fuel, this might save you enough in fuel because you are not wandering around looking for water temps and blue water, to pay for itself in a trip or two.
Sign up online at http://www.terrafin.com/  And then you'll know what No Sniveling and Steve and the rest are talking about.
Please tell them we sent you and no, I get no commission on this-wish I did.
Thanx

Bart,

Wish I'd said that, and don't forget Buoyweather.com, the "virtual wind/wave predictor" where we get our forecast of the seas to expect. Another plus of subscribing to both is you get to play the "home game" of Fishing in San Carlos - even though I'm 275 miles away, I can "see" what it would be like to be there!

See you on the 4th!!!!

In this  post we are all talking about Directions, 180 deg. 150 deg. Etc.Etc.. Keep In Mind that In San Carlos True North and Mag North are almost 11 deg. different So when we are Quoting Terrafin If we say 180 deg at 20 miles we are speaking True North, and most Likely from Marina San Carlos, if you are using a Compuss on your Boat your heading would be 169 deg Mag.  to get to 180 true ,Combine that with the fact there are 2 marinas in SC. from marina Real you would be heading 165Deg to get to the same place, Wow can that get confusing!!! Most Gps units Can be programed for true or Magnetic, I would sugguest we all set are units for true, and use Marina San carlos as a Starting point , aleast then we are all on the same page...also from a saftey stand point if you were ever broke down, some one could be looking in the way wrong place. something to think about   Steve

You are very wise for your years, Grasshopper! I do not know what the all powerful Wizard of Garmin is using for North - might explain why I couldn't find you even with binoculars on Saturday! I will set her for true North on the next adventure. I noticed another anomoly - the distance shown from Marina San Carlos to a lat/lon coordinate on Terrafin and my Garmin BlueChart installed on my computer do not agree. They are different by 10% as measured on my computer. I even went from coordinate to coordinate and the is a big difference:

Terrafin from 27'20"111'00" to 27'50"111'00" = 30.3...OOP! I just took a smart pill and realized one is knots and one is statute miles!

I told you I learn something everytime I listen to you!

So, are we using knots, true North, and what coordinates for the exit from the harbor? You realize we'll be so good, we won't leave any fish once we find them!

Great discussion!

Youse guys! It's "Nautical Miles" and "Statue Miles." Knots is a measure of speed, not distance. Don't make me come down there this weekend (please?) and give you both sailing and navigation lessons! I didn't spend 10 years in the Navy learning all this stuff for nothing! ;)

I always run my GPS on true north, not magnetic. But, I do use statue miles. Perhaps I'll reset it to nautical miles just to be in sync with everyone else. I've always kept statue miles set because it's the same unit of measure used on the highway. So, when I say something is 25 miles, it's the same 25 miles as if you were driving it in a car. I'm also used to adjusting my trolling speeds in mph, not knots.

But yeah, I too have had guys tell me they were XX miles on XXX heading and get there not to see another living soul. Where... are... you?

The other fun thing is when somebody calls you on the radio in the middle of a hot bite and asks where you are. Have to do the quick mental gymnastics of subtracting 180 from the compass (technically, 169). To get around that, once I get out a ways and start trolling, I simply set my GPS with a GO TO point of the San Carlos Marina (the entrance to the harbor right by the pipe and submerged rock is my mark). That way, I can look down and know exactly what true bearing (add 180) and how many miles I am from the marina.

The other option, I suppose, is getting around to hooking up the DSC feature of my radio and GPS. That way, I could just shoot anybody my coordinates that has a DSC radio. Yeah, it's 2006. Ain't technology great? How in the hell did those guys ever manage to navigate around the world using stars and charts?

OK, sailor - knots (kts) is the accepted abbreviation for nautical miles/hour! Like you say, I just wannna' be in the same neighborhood when the "Rapture of the Deep" occurs and all the fish bite anything that is moving through the water!

When ARE you finally migrating from the safety and comfort of the 51 to the wide open seas of San Carlos (no 51 here, so turn off your sounder!)?

Craig - I'll be migrating in (legally, of course!) on May 26 for about 10 days. Can't wait! Been busy polishing the boat and doing all the annual maintenance - upper/lower lube, new oil filters, new fuel/water separators, pull the props and grease the shafts, etc.  Fun stuff! At least the Yamaha outboards are pretty easy to work on and I can do it all myself. Also respooling reels and building some super secret killer lures.

We probably won't fish the LIFT tournament, but will spend all week pre-fishing for the Rescate Tournament the weekend of June 3/4. There will be 5 members of Team Dulcecita, but only four fishing. One is going to be our official camera woman and it's her job to take as many pictures as possible, plus any pics needed on the tournament camera. My terminally-ill brother will be one of the team. I don't suspect he'll be able to crank on any big fish, but he's still healthy enough to participate, perhaps drive the boat. Very likely that this will be the last chance I have to do something like this with him. I have one other super fisherman joining me (yes, a ringer) so it's going to be up to us two to really whack the fish. Regardless, I still like the odds!

The 51 in Penasco has slowed down, but is still producing. I was there at the beginning of April and we boated nothing but big gold-spotted bass. Mi amigo Audi was there the following weekend and pretty much the same, although he did get a couple of red snapper and one 40 lb. white seabass. Another amigo Shawn was there this past weekend on Friday (lucky him, it blew like the dickens the rest of the weekend). They scored a lot of snapper, gold-spotted bass, one halibut, and a 35 lb. sawtail grouper.

Personally? I'm ready for some trolling! YEAH! :D

Steve - You always make good sense! You just need somebody that's a good editor like yours truly! Made any progress on the San Carlos article we talked about?

Stuart has the effect of adding legitimacy to the most mindless of ramblings, and when he chimes in to an actual factfinding thread, it becomes a piece of reference material.

Sorry to hear about your brother Stuart, and if there is anything you need to help make this a special trip, just say the word. I hope it is a stellar fishing trip that fills him with sights & sounds, and leaves you both with a lifetime of great memories.

I'm really looking forward to the chance to finally meet you - it's been over a year of this telepathic type-talk without ever standing on a dock together - that has to end sometime!

Tight Lines!

I second Craig's comment.  Sorry to hear of your brother's illness.  Hope you guys do great in the SCYC/Rescate tournament-we'll see you there.  :)

To the points on navigating and knots and degrees, also remember this.  While telling someone your bearing and distance from a point will get them in the area, if you need HELP, give your lat/long location from the GPS, plus bearing and distance and state which distance measurement being used and true or magnetic bearing being used.  Remember that lat/long is independent of whether you are using true or magnetic to navigate by.  Those numbers are absolute.

Let's all have a great season but be safe out there and help each other out.

Thanx
Bart

Stuart- My hat is off to you and your Brother My thoughts are with you, As craig said we have had lots of good threads together on this site, and I look foward to meeting you and your Brother..Good Luck

Fishinmagishan, Don't take all this Direction stuff To Lightly, I remember  last year when One of Bob Blairs Boats broke a Hull fitting and they were taking on water way faster than the pumps would handle, his Captain Came on the radio screaming His Location, If Memory serves me correctly Bob told us there were like 5 boats there In a matter of minutes , When your sinking at sea its no fun ,and critical you can give directions Fast, In this case His quick thinking Captain fixed the problem Before it sank, but I'm sure he was very happy to see all the help....Just something to think about  Steve

Thank, all of you for your help!  (Craig , Bart and Steve)  I signed up for both Terrifin and Bouyweather.  Great advice.  I plan on spending a lot of time here in SC and this info is invaluable.  I don't know how to repay you guys for your help.  If there is anything I can ever do for any of you, please let me know.

Hope Terifin is correct and we can have a good weekend.
