Those sound like the very rare and hard to catch Pinche fish.

When I was a young boy, I remember whenever my dad would lose a fish, he always said "Pinche..." fish.

Corvina, si.  Nothing trash about them, amigo. They are fine eating. Very closely related to speckled sea trout. We catch them regularly in Puerto Penasco, although I've never targeted them in San Carlos.

I have caught several Corvina weighing over 20 lbs. over the past few winters near Marina Real (many pictures to prove it).  I can assure you that one of the best ways to make a new Mexican or Gringo friend is to offer them a fresh Corvina.  The meat is very nice and white and the guys on the dock know how to make incredible cheviche and fish tacos with it.  I believe you will find that Corvina are of the Croaker family.

Regards,

John
