Men,

Eight years ago a small community of Largemouth Bass fisherman openly shared information with me about fishing the lakes around Arizona.  Because the premise was we all catch and release, info flowed freely. I was able to become successful and share trips with many men who needed a break and needed some freedom from the grind. Then we discovered Lake Powell and the guy who runs the fishery Wayne, shared incredible amounts of info. I have taken 30-40 guys to Powell through those years and we literally caught a couple hundred fish over each long weekend we could break free.  Guys still email me about trips and many guys still have a freedom, a permission to be fishing that I passed on to them.

Next, we moved to incredible Tuna trips out of San Diego due to a community of guys who would care enough to share info and experience with me. Now you guys are the ones to really help me learn the big game fish stuff and the local San Carlos stuff. I am able to share these trips with many guys per year that would not be able to afford and experience this incredible adventure otherwise. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for a bunch of the greatest guys in the world from Prescott, AZ. I sure hope I have an opportunity to thank you guys in person and buy you a Margarita and a Cuban Cigar and someday fish on the same deck with you and share a memory.

Go Fish,
Jimster

Jimster,

Your words ring with the TRUE joy of fishing - the shared experience, the learning, and most of all, the great pleasure of being together with one of the finest groups of sporting men and women in the world. It sounds like you have a solid group, and you will truly enjoy the challenge of taking on the big'uns at San Carlos! While I have almost 50 years of fishing experience in my bag of tricks, these guys took me in (read "tolerated") to this great exchange, and sent me out with great advice on my first year of "full time" fishing at San Carlos. I only thought I was ready for the first blind strike (I learned to look in the spread later!) when that 30VSW went off at full song!

I am ready now for year two, a little practice, a little experience, more secret tips, and more Gotta Have! stuff in the boat than than last year. This year I hope to get my pulse rate down and remember a little more of the battle after the release!

Last year, I saw my first black marlin (actually, I held it by the bill for 30 minutes reviving it!!!), a fabulous 250 pound fish, and we caught it based on locations discussed as the HOT SPOT on this board. If this year is any better, I'll have to wear Depends on the boat!!!!!!

Report will be coming from the first trip of the year, in pursuit of the Pelagic Warriors on Saturday.

Jimster,

While reading your  posting I thought I was reading my own bio.  Catch and releasing bass in Az,. (and in the Mexican Lakes as well), chasing Stripers and Smallies at Powell (isn’t that Wayne a fount of info ?).  Albacore and Yellowtail out of San Diego.    Toss in flyfishing steelhead and salmon on Kodiak Island and chasing Stripers (the fish kind) in the Chesapeake Bay and you and I have been beating the same pathways.

After two decades of chasing after the pelagics out of San Carlos I thought I knew about everything I needed to know about the game.  But last year decided to try rigging my own ballyhoo and guys on this forum were extremely helpful in providing input on various methods.  Especially the guy that runs the U of Hoo – Steve on the Catch 22. – who simply told me to go see Ricardo and have him rig up a couple for me.  I avidly monitor this forum and keep picking up bits and pieces of  info that I decide to try out. (And damn that Iron Man Gary….he boated a Black in his first season…and after all this time I’m still looking !

At the risk of getting yelled at by someone I’d like to emphasize: ISN’T THIS A GREAT FORUM  ?

Jimster,

Amen to your post. Many of us share the love of the sport. Value the resources and keep only what you need. We have a community board in San Diego buddyboaters.com. This group will share any information, link up private boat trips to help find the fish and insure safety. Don't even think about asking about bottom fish reports/locations... we just don't talk about those. The Tuna/Dorado/ YT season wisdom is shared by all. I travel 30-40 miles offshore in a 19ft Trophy. I would not venture out there without the close contact with trusted Pvt boaters. Our passion put us in direct conflict with mother nature sometimes. These boards are a great help to keep the great finunters working together.

Hope to see the same thing in SC June 9-16.
