We had so much fun on this topic before, let's do it again..
My plan is to troll a fly... Will the CD's fastened together as Stuart suggested be all I need?? Or, do I use a daisy chain as No Sniveling suggests??
Should I use both at the same time?? Also, we need to have 'Teaser' to encourabe Mr. Bill up to the transom, so we can cast a fly to him...
What speed should I troll at???
Let's "Get 'er done'...

Hi,
We live down the road from you in Sun Lakes. Please give me a call when you get a chance. We will be doing a lot of fishing in SC and will be pulling our boat down on April 17th for our first stay of a month. (558-3700)

| I think I'd tow four hookless moldcrafts or three with a dredge or squid chain. You'll need a little help to get things back in when you raise a fish for your fly presentation. If you have the guys on board to handle it, you should be very successful. Where do you live in Gilbert??? I live at higley and elliot but am remodeling starting next wee and moving to riggs and mcQueen. Jarrod

For a teaser, I am thinking about buying a Pakula Witchdoctor this year... Anyone ever towed one? I have heard some good things about them, but I don't know of anyone who has used them in SC.

| You can call J&M tackle in Alabama or Melton tackle and get some great catalogs from them. It will explain in detail every teaser out there. I usually troll a witchdoctor when trolling for marlin and dorado. Surface teasers like dredges and hookless moldcraft lures(10 to 14 inch trolling lures) and or squid chains(rubber squids) will help draw sailfish to the surface allowing you to find them a little easier than finding grey shadows 20 feet deep on a witchdoctor. Dredges require a bit of work to get out of the water but they look so cool.. I would use only surface teasers if you are trying to drop back a fly to them. You have to be on the ball at all times. Everyone has an opinion on teasers and I hunch several things will raise fish. You can also save a ton of money putting together your own. Im just thinking of ideas for fly fishing and would adjust if trolling rigged lures or hoos. I live in the circle g right behind you. -Jarrod

I have several types of teasers here at my house in Sun Lakes that I can show you. I can also show you how to get them fairly inexpensively. I have had great luck using teasers on billfish in a lot of different places and I imagine that the fish in SC are pretty much the same as in other parts of the world.

I trolled one from Gunchos Cay, just above Cuba, through the Florida Straights to Ragged Island, then from Ragged Island to Hogsty Reef and circled the reef and on to Provo, Turks and Cacios. I caught two barracuda the whole time. after arriving at Provo I switched the Witch Doctor for an old Bowling Pin Teaser my Dad and I used for sailfishing in Palm Beach and within five minutes I lost the the teaser to a Blue Marlin and hooked a double at the same time. I have retired the Witch Doctor.

Great article on teasers in this month's Marlin magazine-probably not on their web site yet. In a sidebar, Capt Peter Wright, sort of poo-poos the whole concept and says run a big lure close with a hook in it. Interesting.....

That would be my exact line of thinking, Bart. Drop one of my big google-eyed monsters back short. Best teaser going. I agree, put a hook in it and when Big Moe comes up and whacks it, fish on.
I understand what FishnMagishin is trying to do to bait and switch marlin so he can catch one on the fly, but I think he needs to go out and actually catch and release a couple of marlin the conventional way before he does anything else. It is not an easy task to bait and switch unless you know the fish and how they react.
Striped marlin and sailfish are probably easier to do this with because they love to come up and play with the lures before they'll actually take one. The blues? I'd estimate I've only ever seen them come into the spread less than 1/4 of the time before they were hooked up. When the dinner bell rings for a blue marlin, there isn't any fooling around with the lures. It strikes hard and runs. You might luck out and catch one sunning on the surface that you could tease, but a lot of the ones taking a nap in the sun just don't care unless you slap them right in the face with a live mackerel or something.
Just my thoughts.

So Chuck can you share with us the particulars of how to make your bowling pin teaser...I imagine you put a srew eye in the blunt end and attach some kind of tail to the tapered end....Joel

FM,
The bowling aspect relaxes them and get's their guard down, then comes the bait and switch. You throw out the barfly, invite them to a friendly game of pool, and whack'em with the cue!
