On Saturday, Linda & I spent a wonderful day with Judy & Wade on Kryptonite.  First thanx to them for a great day on their beautiful boat and for all their hospitality-what a treat!

We only caught two fish-a dorado for Judy (very tasty) and a small black marlin  (150# or so) for yours truly.  Other knockdowns and tugs on the lines but nada to show for them.

The black completes for me in well over 10 years fishing these waters what  I call a San Carlos Grand Slam on the major pelagic fish-at least one each of black, blue and striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna and a wahoo.  We were talking about it on the way in and appears that this may not be as common as it might appear at first blush.  The two hardest to record are probably the black and the wahoo?

So how about it?  Any others out there with such a slam?  The "naked weatherman" says we can't call it a Sea of Cortez slam cuz there are broadbills further south so we'll call it a San Carlos Grand Slam.  No fair reporting fish you saw caught, were in the crew or captained for, caught with a spear, net or C4.  I hooked and landed or released all seven.  And yes, I'm durned proud of it.

Following IGFA guidelines on slams, guess any 5 of 7 would be a slam-but to be a Grand Slam you need all 7.  Got one?

Hey bart---WTG . I think the toughest deal is to do them in ONE day. Now that is rare.

Thank you both and absolutely agree, except all in one day in these waters would be closer to impossible.

Ok Bart so Here is The tricky Part..I have all 7 "The San Carlos Grand Slam" but my Wahoo Came outside the 50 Mile Radius ? it was further south , That said maybe we should call it the "Sea of Cortez Grand Slam" for 7 , add in the Broad bill and we could call it the Sea of Cortez "Super Grand Slam"..?

tight lines

Steve

PS Congrats Bart

OK---- now---is the broad-bill caught anywhere north of the Pacific IN the SOC? As in PV and Maz which could be considered as being the Pacific----

HMMMM the PACSOC Slam. Sounds like a breakfast menu.

Looks Like we will need a Rules Committee to make all these decisions. If we make it the "Pacific Ocean Super Slam" we would need to Add in the Spearfish ,That would make 9 species so for that it would be a "Pacific Ocean Super Duper grand slam"???

Congrats on your SC Grand Slam Bart.  Three years ago, while fishing with Allan Smith on Ricochet, we caught a big Black Marlin, a nice Blue Marlin, two Stiped Marlin, and finished off the day with a sailfish.  My best day ever in San Carlos.  Unfortunately, we blanked on Dorado and didn't even catch a Skipjack!!

Gee, I was not trying to make this complicated.  Seems to me if you departed from San Carlos and returned to San Carlos with no intermediate port calls, distance traveled is somewhat irrelevant.

Broadbill in SC?  Hmmmm-forgive me for being a skeptic on that one.  I've asked about that for years and the answer has always been-not here.

But thanx to you all.  As far as I'm concerned, Steve's counts.

To get a grand slam you have to catch three of the same species in one day. To catch a super slam its four. Ex Blue, black and striped marlin for the grand slam and add a sailfish and you have the super slam. Alll must be IGFA legal catches to be legitimate.

In 2007 with my kids on board 777 my Dad was in the chair for a grand slam catching a 150 pound Blue Marlin, 300 plus Black Marlin and Striped Marlin. We also caught a sailfish earlier that day that I hooked up after Dad missed three strikes and didnt want to touch the rod. I hooked it up and handed it off to my kids. This was my best day ever on the water. The funny thing was when Dad was on the dock Troy of Tiempo Bandito asked him how the fishing was and he said "not bad" . Troy went out with us the next day and nailed a nice Blue Marlin.

Looks like we are all 1 fish short   ....... Tag reports catching a swordfish this week on Nirvana.

Congradulations Bart!

........ sorry Steve, all 7 of my catches have been less than 16 miles from Pta. Doble on my boat solo.  Grand slam @ 215 16 miles.  Still searching for that swordfish and the yellowtail tuna!

Do we get a t-shirt or something?

About 3 years ago while fishing out of San Carlos on a three day trip to Concepcion Bay, Carmen Island and a little further south I caught a blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, several dorado, 2 big yellowfin tuna, a wahoo, some little black tuna and a few birds. I considered that a grand slam at the time.

Silence. It needs to be done in a day to be a true slam ... and this is the week for it to happen!
