I just got through speaking with Abram Felix from the Corona Light fishing tournament. I am pretty sure they will not allow me to have a table at the registration of the tournament so you can sign our letter to the Governor. I will be there anyway. Why doesn´t Corona Light want the letter to the Governor at their registration table. Well the letter is kind of tough on Conapesca.

And Roman Coral, the head of Conapesca, and the man in charge of conservation of Dorado will be at the tournament. Remember Roman Coral was asked by American Officials at the department of NOAA, last April in Mazatlan, to please send them a letter and they, NOAA that is, would close the border to all Dorado imports into the United States.

I spoke with my NOAA contact just a few days ago and although NOAA has requested the letter several times now no letter has been sent. If any of you get a chance to meet Ramon Coral I would ask you to ask him directly why Conapesca refuses to work with NOAA officials for the conservation of sport fishing species.

As many of you know the whole reason why I am raising funds to go to Washington is so I can convince Rebbeca Lent at the NOAA office of international affairs to enforce American law, more specifically the Lacey act with out a letter from Conapesca officials.

If Mr. Coral truly cared about sport fishing he would send the letter. The truth is that he cares about commercial fishing interests and wholeheartedly believes that Dorado is an underexploited resource and thus chooses to ignore Article 68 of the general law of Mexican fisheries.

If Mr. Coral truly does show up here and participates in some way in this tournament it is just another slap in the face to sport fisherman. From what I understand many are already not happy about the rules of the tournament, Steve just mentioned to me that it is a kill tournament so if I understood correctly the more you kill the more points you get.

The Corona Light tournament directors refused to allow us to have people sign the letter to the Governor. I am currently editing a 6 minute video on the tournament that will be posted on line sometime next week. I have also spoken with many charter operations from Loreto to Cabo San Lucas who are none to happy about the rule debacle. Next year I believe the tournament needs to deal with the many complaints that were lodged with them. I am not against a fishing tournament at all hear. Lets face it we need more tournaments, more tourism but we can not compromise our principles or the enviornment for a few bucks.

The cantina cup has agreed to allow me to be at registration so we can get signatures for our letter to the Governor. So I am grateful to tournament directors for that. Will post the Corona light kill video in English and Spanish when it is done.

I doubt the tournament officials will post the information on number of bill fish killed in total. An unofficial estimate would be that around 30 bill fish were brought in and it is anyone's guess at how many were underweight. I suspect it was 80 percent or more.

Do you suspect any fish were killed and not brought in after the angler determined they would likely be under the weight limits?

That I do not know. I did see one boat with a cooler full of tiny dorado, many females. They opened up the cooler took out as I recall one fish and the rest of the fish stayed on the boat.

yes, and the fish were used to feed hungry people in Guaymas, not discarded off the side of the boat.

Vince-

!!! Please do not post my face in any 'kill video'.  I thought you were filming some promotional material for SAN CARLOS.!!!

15 sailfish - 11 under weight

4 marlin - 3 under weight

I think they should enforce a $cash$ penalty per pound on underweight billfish.  That was the original rule.  19 - 14 = 5 ...... 5 kills for a 50+ boat tournament is nothing!  It would have been only 4 killed if they were not using a cumulative point system.  There is a story!!

Many boats released underweight fish, rather than bring them to the scale.  Guess which boat weighed the most pounds of under weight fish at the scale??  There is your story!!

Do you think I am going to stand back and watch these guys take our fish, $$$$, and trucks too?  I am proud that the "Dream Team" won for Guaymas/San Carlos.

With good rules and enforcement 4 kills is acceptable for the amount of money infused into the community.  Get off their back .... maybe next year we can get the rules changed, and get the unawarded prizes donated to charity.  I underrstand your point!!!! REALLY , but I think we can work with these generous sponsors.

Kevin

I think the only way you will get these guys to run a better tournament is to complain about what was wrong with the tournament. I hope they come back next year but I also hope they run a better tournament. The reality is that the guys running the tournament showed to me personally that politics were more important than sport fishing. You should understand that this was a tournament to promote Corona light not conservation of sport fishing species. That is fine it is their tournament, but that doesn´t´ mean those with complaints must remain silent about them. People complained and were on tournament officials backs about the minimum weight for a marlin and it was changed to 200 Lb´s from 170 Lb´s. Was that a legitimate complaint by fisherman or was it simply a frivolous complaint for the sake of complaining about something? No penalty for underweight fish? Lets face it this was the first time these guys ran a sport fishing tournament and it showed. They should do a better job next year or they will have to deal with more complaints from concerned individuals.

I hope The Corona  Tournament Becomes an Annual Even...The entry fee is very affordable, the prizes were great and its boost for the economy in San Carlos.  As Vince said it was there first year.I think the Bisbee Tournament In Cabo has rules we can all live with..Here are some Ideas for the Future

1) Only 1 Billfish per boat per day may be brought to the weigh Station

2) A tournament control that has a Good Radio and good Communication, It can also Give on the spot updates of fish brought in , For Example in the Bisbee if they weigh a 600 pound Marlin at 10:00 am..Every boat in the Tournament knows about it..now we all know what are bench mark is and we can release 350 pound fish

3) Big fish of the species only...not Cumulative total..

4) Each boat Must give a 500.00 fully refundable deposit..This would be the Penalty money and 10.00-20.00 per pound would be deducted from this for under weight fish ( all penalty money collected is donated to Charity)

5) A catch and release division.

I would Also like to Thank Mario and all the folks that put this Tournament on, Its a Lot of work and I realize no matter what you do you will never make everyone Happy.

Tight Lines

Steve

May by next year at registration a tape measure is given to new fisherman who are uncertain if the fish will make weight. If the fish is obviously not long enough then let it go or face the possibility of an underweight fish and a point deduction.

As I posted before, a length - weight table in the rule book would enlighten the masses and prevent the 30lb sailfrom coming in

minimum length requirements and a $3 tape measure give to each team at the captians meeting would help

Are the tape measures a required type?

How many fisherman were at the tournement?  Would it be possible to get a donation of the tape measures so they could be given to the fishermen?

I heard they had close to 60 boats. Considering Corona light gave away a few vehicles they could spring for some cheap tape measures and a paper hand out on size to weight ratios. That would of course require more effort on their part.

Or a string with a few knots in it works just as well...

I hear they are giving out dipsticks to check fuel level,  maybe a combination dipstick/fish measuring stick. :D
