Did anyone get a picture of the two tuna seiners that were hauling in hundreds of pounds of skip jack today just a stones throw away from the west side of San Pedro Island today? Incredibly bad luck that I had no camera.
I had no idea that Skip Jack was a commercially viable catch here in the gulf and have never seen what I saw today in all my years here hanging out at the island. If it has gotten so bad that commercial seiners from Ensenada have to come here to fish skip jack then things have gotten pretty bad. I wonder if they try to net Dorado and bill fish as well?

| I've heard they use it to mix in albacore dark tuna and cat food.

| Jarrod not just catfood but canned tuna also yuuk. The tuna numbers have been obsolete on the pacific for two seasons. By July 1 on a typical season the Albacore count from the landings in San Diego is from 1200 to 1500 daily , they havent hit 100 in two years.Where's the Fish ? Seiners with helicop spotters show up when the counts get up or Blue fin show in numbers .

| My understanding is that Skip Jack is in the tuna family and is used in low cost canned tuna, hence the dark color. Last edited on Thu Jul 2nd, 2009 03:11 pm by Jimmy

Have any of you ever seen fishing like this in our area though here in San Carlos?

We saw this boat north of the island last Saturday, probably 7 miles.
Question: I read in the other post that it is completely legal for them to sein tuna in the area, does the same go for any type of tuna, particularly within close proximity to land? The skipjack are a very important part of the ecosystem and fishery, especially around structure such as San Pedro, so this is disturbing to me.

That is the question precisely, that is on my mind, need to look into it but I suspect there is some kind of limitation on distance from coast, am going to make a few calls and see if I can not find out the answer to that.

Great image of seiners netting up a huge school of tuna off Loreto on the previous link. Wonder why I haven't caught a dorado in weeks too?
Maybe with some new politicians, the developers in the area could be rallied behind change. Only they may carry some influence able to outbribe the fish mafia. Fisherman aren't going to visit the area compared to places like Baja or Costa Rica soon. An additional small drop in tourism could see any of the multi-million dollar projects here collapse.
Is the longlining for dorado as great a problem in areas like Loreto?

After a little research it would appear that the boat working Isla San Pedro was way to close to the island. One of my sources tells me that the boats can not work that close to the island. It was also confirmed to me that the only reason they are here is that the tuna fishing has crashed in the pacific & that tuna seiners will now take skipjack. This is the beginning of the end for us if we start seeing these boats on a regular basis here.

Sorry, not sure how (or who) that post above got pasted into this thread.?
So is that where all the skipjack went?
Got a pic today Vince that I will have to get you of another morthership in tow. Couldn't make out a name on the boat though. I'm sure they're headed to raid that patch of cool water up the coast north of Santa Rosalia.
