SInce I first saw people using butterfly jigs on this forum, I wondered if many were using the Lucanus jigs, and how they were working out. Any suggestions on colors or sizes or best techniques? I am really interested in how they might work for YT, grouper, pinto bass, sheepshead, etc. They aren't cheap, so I'd like some input before I start experimenting with them.
Thanks

I had the same thoughts when they hit the market and were so hot that you couldn't buy them at list price. If you think about it, have you read any articles in sport fishing sites or magazines about using them for yellowtail?? I know Mark has caught a couple using them and I think PQ may have also caught one or two, but I bet that is it. I was intrigued by the report of using them for dorado holding deep under floating objects, as they do have a unique appearance and can be worked slowly, with a natural looking swim action. I have used them with some success to fish bottom and rock fish, but they give you a great opportunity to test your Spectra if you let them hit bottom in a rockpile! I lost 3 in one morning fishing Roca Acero and Punta San Pedro, but we did catch 20+ rockfish and spotted bass. All in all, the same people that brought you Lucanus also invented butterfly jigs, and they still use the butterfly-style jig for yellowtail.
PS - Anglers Center online sells a less expensive variation if you want to try them.

Yes, this is what I wanted to hear more of, real experiences. I wondered about losing them on the rocks, but hoped they might be more like the butterflies, which I rarely have "snagged" on the bottom, compared to the regular Salas/Tady/Sumo/Iron Mans.
Also thanks for the tip on the similar variety. I'll check that out for sure. I'd really like to try them for grouper, sheepshead and maybe WSB as well as YT.

| Pilo used them on the dead whale last week with excellent results. Not sure how they would have compared to other jig lures.

Pilo, how are you rigging the Lucanus? Spectra with florocarbon leader or mono topshot? What knot/connection for braided and leader? Suggestions are really appreciated, especially from those who've had the experience.
