Great reading everyone's comments!

I'm considering a move to Mexico... or, long term visit. I spent 14 years on N. Shore of Oahu (now landlocked on the mainland) and am really missing the ocean. Currently learning spanish in San Miguel de Allende. Would love to have input on freediving & spearfishing in Mexico... websites, great locations, stories, etc. Looking at San Carlos as one possibility. I've got three young kids and wife to "negotiate" with as far as location. Appreciate any and all thoughts! Mark

Ps. Have been freediving, spearfishing & salt water flyfishing many years in Hawaii and some in New Zealand. NZ Kingfish @ 70ft

Hi Mark,

The winter months are the best for spearfishing as the water is colder. November through March. I'd say January through March are the best. There is a spearfishing competition in March, http://www.yellowtailopen.com.  The most consistent spearfishing is at Isla San Pedro, about 16 miles west of Marina San Carlos.

In the Summer months your best bet is to look for flotsom or sargassum patches and go after dorado (mahi mahi). I haven't done that, but have a friend who has been succesful.

Take a look at the diving forum on this site, there is a recent thread about free diving and spearfishing.

Happy Fishing. Matt

Thanks Matt!

Do you know if there is a spear fishing "community" around San Carlos and if there is much in the way of reef or shallow 0 - 100ft (swim out) style spear fishing? I love the pelagic fish, but probably won't have a boat for awhile.

Thanks for the link! I love Yellowtail as you can see from the photo... this one the NZ variety.

There are a few folks who free dive in San Carlos. Check in with Vince at Sonoran Sport Center. He's a free diver/spear fisherman. http://www.sonoransportcenter.com

Take a look at the other board posting regarding free diving. Acwaman outlines a few place that are shore accessible. Adios. Matt
