Watching Tim Catch a Bucket:  Priceless!

Brought 3 guys down last weekend to fish.  Two of the three, Joe and Chad had offshore fishing experience and the third, Tim did not.  Left Saturday morning about 7 am and headed south east into the wind and 2-3 ft swells.  Went out about 10 miles and made a big right turn back to the west/northwest and started trolling down sea and down wind.  About 9:30 we got a solid hookup on a Pakula Lumo Lilac sprocket trolled from the rigger.  Tim was below taking a siesta, so Chad got on the rod and we released a nice 70# sailfish in about 10-15 minutes.  Put the lines back in and within 20 minutes had a hookup on the same rig for Joe, a small Dorado*.  Another 30 minutes produced a strike for now-awake Tim, a bigger Dorado which unfortunately got off.  Trolled back to the south end of the reef and seas really started kicking up (8 ft+) so we called it a day.  The ride back in was interesting to say the least.

Sunday, we headed back out a bit later about 7:45 and basically ran the same course as Saturday.  Into the wind and waves for about 10 miles then turned toward the reef.  Tim was up to bat but decided that we had good luck on Saturday while he was below in siesta land, so he went back below.  Seas are lying down and Tim is sleeping so we hooked a bucket on the port flat, let out a bit of line, sunk the bucket and then threw the drag in gear, turned on the clicker and started screaming for Tim.  The reel is screaming and he flies out of the cabin and into the chair.  I hand him the rod and we start clearing lines, coaching and cheering him on-“it’s a big one, get him Tim!!”  Now poor Tim, who is bigger than most NFL linemen,  is pumping on the rod and getting nowhere.  The “fish” is still taking line so we take the boat out of gear (of course we kept right on trolling), tighten the drag a bit and he is finally able to gain some line.  We even backed down on his “fish” for him (just a little) and now he’s in charge.  Great technique and we’re coaching him to keep the line going on the reel evenly so of course he has his head down and has no idea what’s on that line.  Finally with about 10-15 ft of line left he looks up and says “I think I caught a cooler!”  At that point we all totally lost it and finished the end game on his “fish”.  Good thing he has a sense of humor or we’d have all been thrown over the side.

So the moral of this little story is never go below for a siesta when it’s your turn to fish!

PS: the photos of Tim and his "fish" are on TDY somewhere in the desert outside of Yuma so will have to wait til they get back to an Internet coneection and will post them.

*PPS: We took the filleted Dorado to Bananas that evening and they prepared it for us for dinner.  Family style, cooked 3 different ways (all delicious) and with salads, sides and drinks the meal for 4 was 56 bucks-wonderful meal!

Years back, when I lived in Kona Hawaii.. I would get inlaws from England..and they would take a dramamine or two...typical English loved the beer in the evening of course..next day in a nice gentle rolling swells of 8-10 was a perfect cat nap for them if they where not sick by then...bloody hell this is rough out here they would say...actually like a lake with rollers...but always offered the perfect time for the famous bucket fish....would do the same, perfect drop back with the reel screaming the clicker....FISH ON...FISH ON...then I had the Bertram 31 a little low in the v berth...bam head hitting then falling thru the door to fight this huge marlin...absolutely hallerious I loved to do this to the english because they do have a sense of humor...after that terrific fight, you could keep enough tension on it then put in nuetral and bam it would sound....the look when that huge bucket fish got to leader...and I would say never seen one that big...I GOT YOU.... DO YOU WANT TO MOUNT IT...:cool::cool:
