OK, curiousity is killing me....you'd think the same characteristics that make circle hooks not dig in in the gut of fish would also reduce # of manofish hookups. how'd this one happen?
you realize you've joined a seriously focused group of fishermen when some of the blood on the deck is your own?

Not sure but when it figured out what was going on it went nuts..The Only thing I could think was another body...Did You Mention that was 10 Min after the shark took everything but the head from a 40 Pound Tuna ?? Happened in Puerto Penasco about 2 or 3 years ago. Mi amigo Audi and I both took our ProKats out to the 51 mile reef. We were fishing maybe 30 yards apart. One of the guys on Audi's boat got a huge hook-up - a monster black seabass. Broke the rod 1/2 way up and they ended up hand-lining it the rest of the way to the surface. They were all whoopin' and hollerin' and talkin' trash to us as they brought the fish up. Easily a 300 lb. fish.
Three of the guys on Audi's boat were working to get the fish into the boat. Two by hand and one with a gaff. As they were getting ready to swing the fish up and in, the gaff broke and the fish fell back into the water. They had left the fish hooked up. We typically use heavy deep-drop rigs with two large circle hooks, one on the top, one near the bottom. The fish was on the bottom hook. As it fell back into the water, it drove the top circle hook right through the guy's hand. Now there was nothing but screams coming across the water.
I motored over to offer assistance, but neither of us had anything big enough to cut through the hook itself. They ended up filing off the barb and pushing back out through his hand. He was fortunate that he didn't cut any tendons or veins and today has regained full use of the hand.
I now carry a set of bolt cutters in my emergency box for future reference.
