Here is a great story about a newbie fisherman. My wife and I just returned form a wonderful week at Casa de Doog's over looking Marina Real. I had this hair brained idea to pull down my 220 Sundeck and go fishing. Borrowed some good gear from a freind and off we went. Marina Real was very hospitable and the slip rent for the week was minimal. After 2 days of getting skunked, we were introduced to a good freind of Doog's........Steve (Catch 22) at the Marina Cantina. What a wonderful person. We talked for a good hour and he gave me some great advice. I also met "No Sniveling" and he had some great info too. So off we went for day three........seas were a little rough so we snorkeled instead. Met for dollar beers that night at the Cantina. Talked with Steve and we decided to charter his boat. What a terrific idea that turned out to be.
Met at 8:30 and off we went. Steve new exactly where to go. We hit the reef and dropped the bait and in no time we were spotting fins (my wife spotted the first one). We circled around and lo and behold this marlin was lit up like a christmas tree 15 yards off the back boat chasin'........little did we know that this would be 1 of three misses ......Steve was flabbergasted. But the experienced fisherman that he is told me......."it's not if, it's when....... so off we go in search of Durado. Oh by the way, Long Lines are a pain in the ass! Once we got to our destination, it was a fish frenzy. Within 2 hours we had boxed 5 beauties, with the first one going over 30#. Having our way with the Durado, Steve decided to go back for those Marlin we couldn't hook. As we trolled over the reef, Steve, Captain Carl and my wife and I were relaxing on the top deck when Steve proclaims......."I guarantee you that the next fish we catch will NOT be a Durado". Within seconds, a line goes south and it's a Durado!!!! Is that reverse psychology?? It's the biggest yet! After a good fight and a good chuckle, we set off to get that Marlin. Captain Carl tries his version of reverse psychology and claims that the next one will definietly not be a bill fish! It didn't take long and another zzzzzzzzzzzz. LOL, the biggest bull yet (40#+). I had to catch that one 3 times as it did not like the boat! (see fish on left in picture).
Well long story made medium, we had the day of a lifetime with Steve and Catch~22. On a day when people were onesy twosy, we were flying an outrigger full of bright yellow flags!
Here is to all the gang at Marina Cantina. My great freind Doog for being such a great person. Luckie (watch out for moving landscaping and flying palm leaves). Captain Carl for steering us always in the right direction........and Steve, a great fisherman, a great person, and now a great freind. We will see you all again soon. Oh, and if you want to catch fish.....see Steve, he will spoil your fishing forever too!!!

Nice catch and adventure. I'd like to see your sundeck. How did it handle the ocean? All the deckboats I've seen are wide and shallow draft, not good for the wave action. Nice dorado as well, that is a boxfull.

| Yes adventure is a great description. She was great in 1-2', ok in 2-4', and an "E" ticket ride at disneyland after that. We had her 12-15 miles out, and on Tuesday the 2-4' kept us from going 20-25'. Didn't want to get beat up on the way back in. Trolling in 2-4 was fine.

It was great to meet you guys and I'm glad you got to go with Steve to see what we (I!!) get so excited about when we talk fishing! I actually came back that evening with a ballyhoo and Sailure to give you to troll with, but you had left the cantina. Then I ran into Steve and another of his buddies at Froggy's and amazed him when we began talking rigs and I walked out to my car and returned with a fresh ballyhoo and Sailure pin rig. I haven't heard if he caught a fish with it or not???
Wishin' I wuz Fishin!

| Where is the reef you were at? I have heard people mention the reef but do not know where it is or if they are always talking about the same one. Any help out there? Thanks

| You will need a map, chart, GPS, or a good sounder to locate the edges, but basically, go 225 from SC for 10 miles and you will be over part of it. Look for the other boats working the area.

| Thank you, do you use Cunninghams or is there something better out there? It is a new boat so I am not sure how well the sounder works but I am looking forward to playing around with it. It comes on and registers but I have not had a chance to try to determine accuracy or sensitivity yet. Thanks

The depth along the reef will vary and it gets shallower the closer you go to San Pedro Island but it is still several hundred feet deep but is less than the depths on either side of it. For those who like me are depth finder challenged here is a dead reckoning way to to find the reef.
Watch the prespective on San Pedro island change as you go further offshore. When you view the island just after clearing Punta Doble, you will be able to see both ends of the island. When you get out 10 miles or so as Craig suggests, the perspective will change and you will be looking up the central ridge line of the island from south point looking north. The reef is an underwater extension of the same ridge that forms the island.
Also watch for current rips and color/temp changes as a guide to the edges of the reef. Depth on the far side of the reef is well over 1,000 ft and it is common for the water to change color and temp along the far edge due to deep water upwelling along the reef ridgeline.
Hope that helps.

I have a Garmin 238 GPS sounder with Mapsource chip and 50/200hz sounder. The sounder will read well down to about 800 ft, which is what I call "the tip of the reef". At the tip, it's about 800' deep on top and I believe it drops to 1200-1600 off the sides. It is only 500-600 yards wide at the end. It gets shallower and wider as you approach San Pedro Island. I have had a lot of good action fishing the "middle" of the reef, about 5-6 miles off the south tip of the island, where it is 350-500 feet deep. My Mapsource chip shows just a couple of depth readings on it, but the Fish'n'Mapco chart shows the contour of the reef, running SE from San Pedro for about 8-9 miles to the deepest part of the tip. You will almost always see a number of boats working tight patterns in that area, so it's not too hard to find usually.
Good Luck!

gracias! sounds like it's time to bust out the plastic and upgrade the depth sounder since not sure mine will read that deep reliably....

| I just picked up the fish-n-map at Tucson Map and Flag the reef is easy to see coming off the SE tip of the island. Looking forward to getting some line wet! Thanks for all the info.

| Yes, that is the one on the left end of the table. In addition to his GAF hole, I had two nice bruises after having to come up out of the chair as he decided not to want to come aboard!!!
