You're coming to San Carlos during a great time for fishing.  You have several options open to you.

1.  Look into the actual charter prices.  There's several advertized on the Internet.  I guarantee you, they will all show you the best time possible.  That's their business.    If you could find someone down at San Carlos, to buddy up to a threesome or foursome (three is max for my preferences)  it would be even more economical.

2.  There's some services that will take you out somewhere close to bottom fish with a chance to maybe hook a dorado on the way out or back.

3.  It is possible to hire a panguero to take you out in a panga if you can find one.  You can usually make your own arrangements for price and where to go with them.

4.  You can rent a kayak, and go where you wanted within limitations.

5.  Due to the warmer water, there can be some pretty good fishing right from shore.  There's places that. have public access that you can surf fish, or off of the rocks.  You don't even need a license to do that.

Having done all of the above, I, personally would choose option #1, since I'm guessing You don't do this frequently.  It might be worth a few hundred dollars for the experience of a lifetime.  I'd even break open the kid's piggy bank for an opportunity like that.   ...and sometimes you don't catch fish no matter what you throw at them.

Tony,

I am also going down for the 4th of July weekend and am wanting to charter a boat.  Only 2 or possibly 3 (maybe wife) of us right now.  If your interested we might be able to split the cost of a boat charter 3 ways.  I was looking at probably Friday or Saturday as I will only be there Thursday-Sunday.  Catch 22 seems to come recommended on the forums if they are available.

I agree about making reservations ASAP.  If there's a tourney going on, you might already be too late, unless someone would take you as a paying contestant.  I don't know what your share of the entry fee would be, but I'm sure the information is available on this website.  If it were me, (and I wish it was) I'd be emailing all the charter guys I could.  I must stress again, they are all going to show you the best time possible.  That's their job and they're good at it or they don't last very long.

The last time I went out on a charter was with Lalo Muñoz on his 23' Parker, Sueltame.  His website is http://masatun.com/.  His boat is clean, and well organized with all top notch equipment.  Lalo is a good sailer and fisherman.  I enjoyed the time I spent with him, but they're all good guys.  I'd be breaking open the kid's piggy bank and stealing his lunch money for an opportunity to fish in a tournament.  Around fourth of July has always been my favorite time to fish San Carlos, with tuna being thrown into the equation.  Good luck on finding a boat.  The sooner the better.
