Pez Caro here. What channel do you monitor? My partner told me this morning that it's no longer 68. Let me know. I'll be down this weekend.

Do higher or lower numbers make a difference in terms of reception qualities?

No, better reception is a function of a good antenna and radio with the antenna as high as possible above the waterline.
I understand that fishing channel is 68 and tournament channel is still 85.

Hola- Channel 85 has a Local repeater and works Mucho better at long distance...Fact is 68 is the local fishing channel for now and 85 is the Tournament channel..I Use and Monitor both..( 2 Radios)
