Quagmire left the dock at 0530 headed for the island in 74 degree water. Upon arrival, one panga was busy bringing in y/t after y/t. After successfully anchoring, we to joined the club. We boated two fish in the 30# range and lost several more. We also boated a couple of skippies and baraccuda. Live bait was the trick. Unfortunately, we didn't have any. Tomorrow will be a different story.
We left the island and trolled in 74 degree water starting at about 260 at 22 miles. We saw several marlin, but could not get any takers. We ran across a kelp patty and took a couple of nice dorado. At 225 degrees, we headed back in and took a couple more dorado and saw a few more marlin. The warm water had moved out and cold dark water moved in.

I've not fished the island before and have a couple of questions:
What type of live bait was the panga using and do you know where they get it?
How deep was the water were you fishing?
Is there a particular section of the island that is typically better than the others or do the YT move all around?
Coming down to fish next week.
thanks, Craig

| This week the panga guys were using sardines. They have to be netted. The fish are where the fish are. Just look for the pangas, they are the smartest guys out on the water. From a distance, watch what they are doing and you will learn a lot. water depth varies greatly, 75-200+ feet.

Thanks for the heads-up on bait situation. I wasn't sure if they were using mackerel or sardines. If we can find the mackerel we'll get them. We're not permitted to use a net for sardines so this is less of an option unless we can find a panga selling. We'll also be bringing down frozen squid and sardines for chum/bait. We're driving down from SoCal with a 24 Skipjack "Boomer". Leaving Sat. & should arrive sometime Sunday. We plan to fish Mon-Thurs. We'll probably monitor CH 68 vhf if this is the local preference. Always like to stay in touch with buddy-boaters for safety.

Don't worry about the dead bait, it will be useless. Salas 7x in blue/white and some spped jigs work well if you don't have live bait. Make sure you bring a reef anchor. A danforth will only get stuck.
Get out to the island early. We leave the dock at 0530. If you want to be there in the grey, better leave at 0430.
