Hello all,
I am coming to San Carlos the first week of June and am going to charter a boat for fishing. The other guys that I am with are concerned that an 8 hour trip is too expensive. Is it even worth it to do a four hour trip? We are going to go with Catch-22 for our company if possible. If anyone has any opinions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
Catch 22 is a good choice. As four 4 hours vs all day it really depends on how far the fish are out. The first week of june there will definetly be fish but will they be 12 miles out or 25 miles out ? and there is no-way to predect that at this time. If the fish are 20 plus miles out and you are looking at a hour plus boat ride each way 4 hours may not leave you much fishing time. You may want to look at 5 or 6 hours.
i would recomend waiting on that decesion till it is closer to the time and then simply talk to Steve or Fernando (both are reputable people ) and get a estimate of where the fish are and apx. travel time to get in the right area.
GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the info. We were thinking of a 6 hour compromise.

I would recommend you make the decision when you're out on the water depending on how close the fish are. I fished all summer and the average distance was 20 miles so that is an hour of travel to the fishing grounds and another hour coming back. That leaves 4 hours of fishing an extra 2 can be critical. there is so much prep time and energy spent by you and the captains another $150 split by your buddies is not much.

You have used words in the same paragraph that just don't go together: "fishing" and "too expensive" cannot be used in the same conversation. I'd get new friends!
All joking aside, Fernando and I had a chance to run to the island at 2PM the other day. Word from all the boats returning was "1 fish" or "nada". We found massive schools of yellowtail busting bait on the NW end, but they didn't even start until 4PM. We were surrounded by crashing fish until we had to leave before it got too late.
It just depends on how bad you've got the bug, but after spending $3.50/gallon to get there, rental, meals, tolls, and more, I can't see cutting short on the fishing. At that time of year, 2 hours can mean 2 marlin or missing the "floating something" that has the wide open, non-stop dorado bite around it. Besides, if you get lucky, you'll be done in 4 hours with a camera full of photos and a fish locker full of dorado, with extra $$ in your pocket to share with your Capitan.......spread the joy
Tight Lines!

well said! even more important than the $ may be the fact that most of us can only get a certain amount, regrettably usually pretty limited, of time off work each year. makes sense to maximize your fishing even if you drop some $$.
at least that's how i try to rationalize things to my wife, and it (usually) works....

I fish all over the Baja and the best value in the baja for fishing is San Carlos.
The charter companies are great. The prices are very reasonable. Go out for a full day and take home a lifetime of memories and a few stories to tell all your friends at home.
Life is good in San Carlos
