Hi

My boat is 8'6" wide. I believe this is just over the AZ limit of 8ft.  We plan on going thru. the Mariposa crossing. Should I anticipate problems and if so any ideas.

Thanks.

You should have no issues. I've pulled a 10' beam, a bit white knuckle, but no problems.

Be careful as road shoulders are sometimes non-existsnt or soft.

We've been through several times with no problems legally (your width is fine), or with the traffic. Just the same as pulling on a narrow 2 lane here in WY. or through Denver traffic.

Stay in your lane in Hermosillo. On the "Interstate", drive speed limit or a little  less and then slow down somewhat when you see a bus or truck approaching to pass from the rear. As Bahiatrader advised, there's mostly no shoulder, just an abrupt pavement edge, don't stray over or let your trailer creep off.

Pay attention, remain alert, be a defensive driver the same as in the US. But most important, enjoy.Ron:cool:

Going through Hermosillo shouldn't be any problem if you stay on the main drag.  The signs are easy to follow.  Obey the km. limit, and signs explicitly, and don't bother trying to make it through a yellow traffic light.  Nevertheless, it's sometimes better to pay $500 pesos or $50 US mordida to avoid going to the officina to do the paperwork, hauling a boat around with you.  I've done it both ways.  The transitos (city traffic cops) know this, and it's how they make their living.  Supposedly the Calderon administration wants to change this, but that's the way it's been in Mexico for a long time.  I know a lot of people will frown on my advice, but by my experience, it's sure a lot easier way to get through town if you get stopped.  Hopefully you'll just breeze smoothly through town as I have numerous other times.

Thanks for all the advice.  The boat is quite light as it is a 24' RIB with a 200 Merc. I may deflate the tubes to reduce the beam and windage. Has anyone seen any other large RIBs in SC, I have not, or am I going to be the only one in town?

Be sure and put a big "oversize load" sign on the back while traveling through AZ. The DPS loves to investigate people pulling big loads.

You'll have no trouble pulling down. There are other hard bottoms there, many off and on. We have an 18' combat rubber raiding craft we've redone and they are awesome. We have a 50 Merc. I would ask if you need a Mexican pilot's license to fly that thing with a 200 hanging on it? Don't know that there's another 24 footer, but it should be great fun and mostly elite. Enjoy, Ron:cool:

You will have no problem in AZ at 8'6" and do not need a sign.

Thanks for all the input. I will take it slow and I plan to have another vehicle traveling with me. Trailer is all checked over and new tires.  Tow vehicle is a 3/4 ton Suburban which should handle the trip OK.

I would take the truck "periferico" around Hermosillo...I pulled a boat thru town once, trying to stay in right lane and out of the way, but wouldn't you know it a police truck was pulled over and hanging in my lane..I had no room to the left, and got all the way by him then my boat trailer side bar clipped his electric mirror, sparks and glass everywhere! What fun! and they won't take your Mex insurance!

Just be sure and use Mariposa coming and going. Downtown and Sonoita get pretty tight coming back into the US.
