First time trip to SC with some buddies over memorial day weekend. Looking to do some in-shore with the pals, and do some fly fishing solo from the shore. WHat can we expect to catch that time of year in shore? What about from the shore on the fly? What kind of tactics/flies should I use?
Thanks-
Daniel

Daniel, I'm sure this will be the first of many responses on your question. My advice is don't expect to catch anything from shore with flies. Assuming you don't want to go out on a sportfishing boat (where most of the activity will be offshore with Dorado, marlin, and sailfish) your best bet would be to bring or rent a kayak. With a kayak and paddling up to a half mile offshore you are likely to reach patches of seaweed which may contain small dorado. Also, schools of skipjack (not good to eat but outstanding fighters on light tackle) may be near shore (but not accessible by casting from the shore) Lastly, with a kayak you can access some rocky reefs near the inshore islands (either out from the Pilar/Delfin condos, or near Isle Venada on the West side). Good luck...and one place to rent kayaks for kayak fishing is http://www.scaamexico.com. Send an email to Bryan who can give you tips on kayak fishing.

Going to be tough from shore there are chances at fish near some of the beaches but mostly bait casting from shore near rocks.I would look into a charter and go out for dorado and sails. I know Steve from catch 22 fishing has done this with good results but that is a very busy weekend might be hard to find a boat. Here a link to fishing on this site has info #s and contacts

I've walked the beach right at daylight with a fly rod looking for bait boils. I've hooked a variety of fish, usually not very big, but I always had fun. Sometimes you have to wade over waist deep to get a streamer into the boil, and I never knew what I was going to hook. One time something, I'm guessing a shark maybe, broke a six-lb. tippet fair and square. I got most of my strikes on white streamers with red or black. The beaches are great then, because there's usually nobody around. I've been doing that since before I heard you couldn't catch anything off of the beaches at San Carlos. Traditionally, hardly anybody gets up early in the morning in Mexico.
PS If you like an early breakfast, plan on fixing it yourself. I've never found anyplace to eat before 7:00 AM.

Last October I caught quite a few fish on Posada Beach on the east side. Best bait was a Krocodile spoon- they cast a mile and swim with lots of action. The water was very warm early in October and the fishing dropped off as the water cooled.
I will be back in May with a new Hobie pedal powered fishing kayak. Hopefully the water will warm a bit and I can catch some better fish.

| Time of the year is critical. In October/November the bait was stacked near the shoreline off of Pilar/Delfin, and a lot of fun could be had casting small Kastmasters for 9" fish...bonefish, pompano, juvenile roosters. Probably some of these could have been caught with a flyrod. However, I've tried this (i.e. casting Kastmasters) a few times in December, January, and February with no hits at all!

Being one of the few fly fishers in San Carlos.. I suggest the suggestions prior.. Save up some dinero and hire Catch-22 or Jon Jen.. Steve of catch 22 has taken fly fishers out that did well on a clever white fly.. So clever was it that I hooked up a Striped Marlin on one..
Kayak is a great idea.. We have a boat in SC, but thinking of yaking for the fun.. Sc beaches are not like beaches you see in some magazines..
Memorial Day Sunday night crossing may be time consuming to say the least..

| Wow. This site is fantastic. I can't believe the number of responses I received in such little time. I appreciate all the input and look forward to putting it to good use. Thanks for saving me the time and headache of trying to figure it out by trial and error.

| I was down in the beginning of June last year. We stayed at Pilar Condos and fly fished from the beach. I would just go out in the morning before everyone got up and walk up and down the beach looking for any kind of action. I caught a few different fish, but nothing of size. Everything I caught was under 14''. The 14 incher was a lady fish. If I can find the pictures I'll post them a little later. I was using clousers. White and chart was the best. I had a good time. Every morning there were dolphins there with in casting distance of the beach chasing bait fish. It was really cool. I am upset at my self for not going to check them out. Such beautiful animals!!!

What's up with the name? Too many coincidences to ignore so I gotta call BS. You join the forum on 4-12 which happens to be my birthday? then you ask fly fishing questions and I am a fly fishing nut? Yup this guy has gotta be one of my loser friends trying to get me riled up. Last edited on Wed Apr 16th, 2008 03:49 am by o-show

None of my friends fessed up to being an imposter trying to get me worked up with the name similarities. I apologize. Welcome to the board.
Now, if i was going down with a flyrod for a recon mission i would rent a 'yak from Brian (repsilon) i don't know his daily rate but I bet he's pretty cheep. You can usually find him in the encantado realty office just up the road from marina seca. take a bungee cord to strap the 8wt to the kayak deck and take a few decievers and whatever else you like to cast. I prefer shooting taper fast sinking lines. Cruise the kayak around structure and look for skippys busting little anchovies around the rocks. Lots of fun and they fight like hell. the area between the palapa restaurant (across from marina seca) and the main marina has lots of structure that should hold fish near shore. I've caught a few skippys on the fly in this area from a 16' aluminum boat.
i've had the pleasure of landing 25-30 lb dodos on the fly in sc...To much fun to describe. if you got the time and a few extra bucks book a trip on one of the charters. Tell them you'd like to try and hook a dorado on the fly and see what they say.
I've never had much luck shore fishing with a fly stick in SC but taking up chanoc on his offer might be worth it.
