This is a follow up to the discussion on Observers, which made the basic premise of hosting a tournament for our volunteers. I offer this up for discussion and consideration.
Tournament eligibility: San Carlos volunteers who support all manner of good works in the area, including fishing tournaments, stuff for kids, etc. Second category for professional local captains, who usually do all the hard work in our tournaments but don't usually get to fish. If both implemented, captains and volunteers compete in separate categories.
Entry fees, etc: Ideally, we get enough commercial sponsors to pony up that there is no cost, but maybe a small entry fee is appropriate. Fees will be the responsibility of the boat owners.
Timeframe: Veterans Day weekend in November. Fishing is still very good, weather is nice and many of our San Carlos reverse snowbirds have returned to the area from summers up north.
Operations:
Blind draw volunteer/boat match up. Each boat will state number it can accommodate and go thru blind draw rotation til all volunteers or as many as can be safely done are matched with a boat-avoids fighting over who is fishing with whom.
Captains will fish on their own boats.
Hours: 7 or 8 to 2 or 3 or 4. Don't turn this into a marathon-supposed to be fun.
Honor system all release-no cameras or observers-fun day.
Minimize need for more volunteers to operate-do on water tournament control. Weigh station for food fish only?
$$-small prize pool for captains, trophies for volunteers-KISS
Thoughts? comments?
Thanx

Sounds good Bart except 2 things (captains fishing on there own boats)
Most captains I know would not want someone else driving there boats so how could they fish hire /pay other captains lowers the numbers that can fish.
And fuel who pays im sure some owners would pay it and some would not if they were not fishing.

Assumes owner/mate/other responsible party will be on board and Captains can maneuver in the marina-intent is to get them fishing-how that works out is between the individual captains and owners.
Re fuel, the expense of the day is borne by the owner-supposed to be a reward for volunteers. I'll be on mine and i will absorb the fuel cost.

The tournaments would not be possible in San Carlos without the hard work of the volunteers. Count me in Bart.

| Bart, you have a good idea, but would like to make a couple suggestions. How about a men's and ladies catagory and a 75 year old or older catagory for each sex?? Allow the older participants to use electric reels and violate all USGA rules.

Wonder how many entrants we'll get in the men's 75+ plus, electric reel, no rules category? Guess at least one!

Seriously, I have no problem with more categories as long as we don't create so many as to become lots of categories of very few anglers and create more work-this is supposed to be fun and that includes those who put it on.
Thanx

I think we you allow bringing fish in your cooler out with you when you leave the dock.
And how about adding a cross dressing division
If we can help in any way The Sea of Cortez Boat club is 100% behind you Bart.

Not only would you be violating USGA rules but Mexican fishing regulations also with electric reels. If I'm not mistaken and I may be I think it states in the Mexican fishing regulations that you must be "handicapped" to use an electric reel and get permission to do so.

The IGFA rules disallow electric reels, but I don't think there was any intention of following them for this tournament. This is meant to be a fun day of fishing for all the wonderful volunteers whom spend time helping making the tournaments possible.
We certainly will not break any Mexican fishing law. I think that we time to start looking into exceptions or permission for anglers that would require mechanical assistance.
