We now have a vhf repeater in place thanks to Ruben Pinto of Charlies Rock and will be testing all week. The channel is 85 USA and the plan is to use this channel for all the fishing tournaments in San Carlos. We will be monitoring this channel and would like to hear from anyone who is 14-15 miles out or further this week. This will be very helpful in determining if this is the way to go.

Any initial results on the performance of the repeater?

Dick, do you mean you need help on the technical side of how the repeater operates or you sure do need the help that the operation of this repeater would provide on the water?
Or both?
What is not happening with the tests?

I will give you a shout tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday. I may be venturing out in search of warmer waters......to the south.

Hook, as far as I know it is up and running, just need for people on the water to give me a call so we can be sure it is doing everything we want it to do. Craig, please give me a call when you get out Sunday and Monday. My handle is Graybeard.
Thanks, Dick

Dick, I'll bite on this one.
In order to test this, the boat would set its radio to channel 85 and transmit and the repeater will send that on to you. Is that correct?
Are there hours of operation for monitoring this?
What channel are you monitoring if not channel 85?
Thanx
Bart

Bart, you are correct, the boat must have their radio on 85 (usa) and transmit to me at home. Will be monitoring 24-7 on 85 only. Hope this clears it up.

| Had great results today, Shady Lady called me this morning while I was having breakfast at Maria's, he was 26 miles out on a 180 and I had my hand held, could hear him very good. He also called later while I was home on my base and we had very good communications. Very pleased with today's action and looking forward to tomorrow and Monday when more boats will be out. Think we are gettig there.

Well, being out on a 180 heading would probably put you within line of sight of Charly's Rock, if that is where the repeater antenna is. NW of SPN could put a significant amount of piedra in between.
What do you estimate the height of the antenna, Dick?

| The antena is located near to the water tank on the caracol. It is the highest point on the caracol. Would guess that the tower is over 50 feet high.

| Just an update on the repeater, today was the best, thanks to Steve Calvert on Catch 22 Pez Vela, he was out as far as 46 miles today and was able to talk with him on my hand held from Ley's parking lot. He also talked with Charlie from Charley's Rock who was on a hand held in Empalme. Looks like we have a winner thanks to Ruben Pinto. Remember this is chanel 85 (usa).

Wow, 46 miles out...................sounds like an exploratory run for blue water.
Congratulations to all who have made this possible, especially Ruben Pinto.

General ham radio etiquette may be useful here.
You generally want to use a simplex (non-repeater) transmission when possible. By possible, I mean if you can communicate with your intended targets via channel 68, then use it.
If you find that you cant raise your intended targets (and after making sure you are talking at high power and with the squelch at a minimum threshhold!), then it might be time to try the repeater frequency. Start with a low power in your attempt to reach the repeater.
Repeater etiquette suggests limiting conversations to the minimum amount of time to get the facts across. Limit "jawboning".
If this repeater proves to be vastly superior to the reception of MSC on 16, it should probably be considered as a secondary emergency hailing frequency and everyone might want to put it into their scanning lineup.
All of this is subject to the uses allowed by the "owners" of the repeater. But in the case of emergency transmissions, ANY frequency is fair game and the owners would hopefully concede this.

Any comment on use for emergency purposes from the "owners". It may change my choice of antenna.

An update from Dick Newlon
Yesterday morning Sassy Lady, Andale, EZ money, and Sea Ya left San Carlos for La Paz. We were able to communicate all the way to Carmen and this morning I just talked with Andale and they were at Catalina Island. My calculations show this to be approx 175 miles from San Carlos. Think we have a winner for all the fishing tournaments this summer.

I will be heading down this summer and just wanted to check that I have the correct info.
14-Port Captain
16-Emergency
68-Sport Fishing
72-Cruisers net
5,18,69,71,72-Conversation
85-Repeater? what are the considerations for using this?
Are these correct and are there any others I need to program or be aware of? Thanks.
