Does anyone ever make squid for bait down there for the yellowtail?

Joe,

I have never seen squid small enough to use for live bait. It's fairly easy to catch Humboldts for cut strips. I've stopped on meter marks in the middle of the channel on the way to Isla San Pedro and caught squid almost every time.

was it always presunlight when you caught the larger ones for cut bait and is it year round.  I am coming down a week from Friday for a few days with some buddies and I am hoping to get them some yellowtails and some bottom fish.  Does anyone know the hot colors on butterfly jigs.  Do people use any irons like salas jigs to yo-yo yellows off the bottom or on boils on the surface?

I've never been able to find small squid for sale in San Carlos or Guaymas.  Whenever I'm in Rocky Point before I come to San Carlos, I always go down on the Malecon and pick up a kilo or so of calamari from 6" to 10" for bait.  Good bait for bottom fishing.  The little ones on a single hook are great for pitching to dorado under floating debri with no weight.  They make a great jig.  I even bring them home frozen for striped bass in the Colorado River.

Usually early, but not necessarily pre-dawn, and I have caught them trolling Rapalas off San Antonio in the middle of the day. You can also check the pangas by the estuary at the back of the bahia and just buy some. That being said, the first two yellowtail I caught at San Carlos (1992) were on squid and I don't think I've caught one on squid since .

All of my yellowtail since bringing the boat down have been jigging or trolling wire line and Rapalas/YoZuri's/Mirrolures - 90% on jigs. If I had to take 5 jigs with me (and leave the other 95 home ;)), I would have a 150g green mackeral knife jig, another one in case I lost that one, a 200g orange/glow knife jig, a Salas 6Xjr scrambled egg, a 6Xjr sardine (baby s*it), and a 6Xjr scrambled egg. I know that's 6, but I always hide one scrambled egg in case my friends lose all of theirs! I fish the Salas in 200' or less and go to the knife jigs for 150' and deeper.  I have found that the heavy jigs on a fast "crank n jerk" work fine for the surface boils, and there is seldom the "slow-pick" surface bite like you see off of the Baja. I did catch my biggest yellow on a monster 7X light, right off the rock on the south end of San Pedro, but very few others on the light jigs.

Good Luck!

Craig

thanks for the good info.  i can relate to the 100 jigs.  I sold a ton of stuff at the swap meet a few months back and evryone was asking why I was selling 'all my stuff.'  I just replied I was trying to get things down to a resonable #.  I mean how many of the exact same irons or lures can I throw at a time?  God bless and Happy Easter...  the Lord has risen!

Ley often has "calamar chico", so does some of the smaller fish markets. I have bought them from my Compadre who has a fish market by the stadium, and at the fish market in guaymas norte.
