I have a pontoon boat here in Colorado and my friend says I should tow it to San Carlos and go fishing on it - I told him there are no pontoon boats there or out on the water and there must be a reason - I plan on bringing my Montgomery 17 down there but I had really never thought of taking the 24 ft pontoon down there.  Any thoughts out there on this?

It would be a great big waste of time.  If the wind came up you would be in some trouble.  You would be much safer in a 17' deep vee boat.  Just my two cents worth.

The Sea of Cortez is an ocean, not a lake.  Before you take ANY boat out on it you need to understand what that means and be prepared.  I hadn't been on a lake for a while, but I spend 7 days on a big one in TN this past summer.  It was very interesting to watch the things my brothers did with their boats on the lake that were perfectly safe for there, but would never fly here.

A pontoon boat is absolutely not suited for the SOC.
