I have tentatively planned to bring my boat and fishing gear this coming September – What is involved (paper work) to bring my boat into Mexico and what if any restrictions on the amount of personal fishing gear brought with boat.

Appreciate the assistance!

Effective January 2008, boat permits are no longer required for vessels practicing sportfishing in Mexican waters.  You might consider getting insurance for Mexico on your boat.

We've hassled the rod thing quite a bit on this forum.  Evidently there are maximum numbers of fishing rods you can bring.  There's several posts about it in the archives.  I just bring as many as I plan on using with a backup in case of breakage.  Everyone in the boat has to have a fishing license if one person is fishing.  Good luck, and have fun.

BT points out part of the answer but think thee is more to your question. So here we go with "Bring a Boat to Mexico 101".  You are dealing with 3 separate but related issues here so let's address each one.

Tow vehicle (Car, truck, SUV)-To bring the vehicle into Mexico, you must have the registration and must have Mexican Insurance.  US insurance is not valid in Mexico. If you do not plan to travel further south than San Carlos, you are in the free zone and do not need to a permit for the tow vehicle.  See the Travel Info page on the main web site for more details if going on past San Carlos/Guaymas.

Boat and Trailer-To bring the boat and trailer, you must have the trailer registration and either state registration or USCG documentation on the boat.  You will need on the water liability insurance for the boat or the marinas will not let you launch at their facility.  When you get your tow vehicle insurance, list the boat and trailer as a towed unit and you will have coverage on those while in transit. On the water usually does not cover the boat while being towed.

If you do not plan to leave the boat in Mexico, it is not absolutely necessary that you obtain a temporary import permit (TIP) which is good for 10 years.  If you plan to leave the boat or make this trip frequently, it is a good idea to get one.

One point that does come up over and over is the tow vehicle and boat/trailer should all be registered to the same person.  This probably causes more heartache than any other issue.  There are workarounds but they get somewhat complicated so the simple answer here is don't try it.

Fishing Tackle-You are allowed two rods and reels and reasonable amounts of terminal tackle and so forth per person in your party.  If you are buying new rods and reels to bring, remove the boxes or packing material and carry in reel case or the like.
lots of shiny new Penns or Shimanos in original boxes should be avoided.

I routinely carry my big game reels back and forth so I can do maintenance, re-spool , etc, here in my own work shop. Never had a problem doing that and have been inspected several times.

Strrykerr, hope that answers your questions.

Well said indeed.

If you plan on brining your boat into Mexico frequently, or even every two or three months, you might check on buying annual boat insurance in Mexico, from a Mexican agency.  I've been buying all of my Mexican insurance from the same Mexican agency on an annual basis for eight or nine years.  The agencies at the border have a higher profit margin, I'm sure.  There is also the option of buying your insurance on-line.

Don't worry about a language barrier.  In professional offices in San Carlos, and even Guaymas, there's usually someone who can speak enough English to sell you insurance.  I'm sure they will be extremely polite, and helpful to you.   The savings using a local agency will buy a lot of boat gas.
:DMaybe someone who reads this forum can give you suggestions on how to shop for boat insurance in San Carlos.:)

In fact I fired my local provider because the level of liability I was allowed became tied to the value of my boat by survey...strange but true.  I carry full coverage-hull, liability, contents, enviro, etc.

The absolute requirement is liability and we sell boat liability, nol hull coverage on the web site, on our insurance page.

I think I bought two day coverage from the forum page once so I could get to Rocky Point and renew my policy.  Thanks, I'll check my liability limits.
